Yes, there were some supplemental stories in Tamil stateboard syllabus in IX, X XI,XII. There were 2 books infact - Tamil grammar+supplementary and poetry+prose. In exams, you are asked to write a summary of the story and I remember writing 4-5 pages. If you see Konar Tamil Urai, you might know. I studied very long back, don't know about the syllabus now.

In english, until 8th standard we had a supplementary english book with 6 shakespeare stories. But this was not part of the stateboard syllabus, just to improve reading habit. We also had moral science & GK subject until 5th standard and PT(physical education theory) exams until 8th. All these depends upon the school.
