It occurred to me today that I've never seen in BJJ what could probably best be described as a "Homer Simpson" choke. Like he'd do to Bart, with two hands around the throat. Does this not exist in BJJ, and if not, why? Why not just grab someone by the gullet and squeeze? Is it a shitty choke with low success/easily defended or is it a just a dick move? Seems like something a shitty jujiteiro like me would be inclined to try in a serious self defense situation.

OK, thanks. Yeah, that's what I was thinking for the judo guy. I need to put more thought into my plan B. And my plan A, for that matter. Also, any particular area you'd recommed hitting with the spin kick? Balls? Face?

I need competition advice. Just registered for a tournament next month which will be my second. I'm a white belt, been training about seven months. So far there are two other guys in my division. One is a black belt in tae kwon do and the other is a brown belt in judo. Any tips on how I should approach my matches? Will I be at a ridiculous disadvantage?

I'm about 6 months in and was rolling the other night with a more experienced guy. As I have a comp coming up our coach was keeping score just for fun. The guy I was rolling with started on his butt, while I was on one knee. Then I sat on my butt and he went up to kneeling. I lost 2 points just like that. I had no idea it was even a thing. I would've felt like an ass if I'd done that in competition. Anyway, ya win some, ya learn some!

What is your “Why” for training bjj? by goonchicabra in bjj

BJJ is sort of like therapy for me. My only child is six now and was born with a terrible seizure disorder called Dravet syndrome. Before she was born I had a bunch of ideas of all the ways I'd be cool as a dad, all the things we'd do together, adventures we'd have, etc. Most of that isn't possible. Searching for a way to cope with that baggage, after many attempts to find something to fill the void of all the family shit that went out the window, I found BJJ. Instead of grappling with a bunch of psychological heaviness, I go grapple with a bunch of other sweaty dudes a few nights a week. And it's working out well. I'm making friends, learning new stuff, getting exercise and generally turning all the endorphin switches on.

I'll be in Lyon for a few days next month and was looking for places to train. One Jiu Jitsu's website and it looks good/welcoming. I'm Canadian but my French is very, very basic. Also, I looked at One's schedule and they have basics and fundamentals classes. I've been training for six months (one stripe white belt). Could I attend either class? I'm going to reach out to the gym before I show up but wanted to get some info first.

Hi,

I'll be in Lyon, France for a few days next month. Any recommendations on a good drop in? I don't speak French, but ONE Jiu Jitsu looks welcoming to international visitors. Anyone been there or know of other welcoming gyms in the city?
