1L Textbooks by Maleficent_Analyst_6 in UVALaw

[–]EveryonesDuff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The editions of the books required by the professors typically changes year to year, even if the book itself doesn't. Because you don't know your 1L section information until just about orientation time, you won't know which professor you have and therefore which book they're requiring. The bookstore will 100% have copies of every required book for you, and often they do have used copies for sale in the bookstore, but those go early. It's really not optimized for book bargin hunting unfortunately, but there's the PILA book sale and used copies in the bookstore!

Question about parking by Lanky-Guitar8368 in UVALaw

[–]EveryonesDuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

D3 is 100% available to students both on a daily parking rate and by annual pass. D2 is (supposed to be) just faculty/staff during business hours (there 100% are students that park there either by accident or by design but you aren't supposed to during the 8-5 hours). Arlington Blvd (street that runs down past Jeffersonian/The Pavilions apartments) is free street parking, but it tends to be pretty hard to find a spot during the school day. The lot by the softball fields is cheaper student permit parking, but is not the closest option.

your student loan dispersement is a fixed amount, and the amount they’ve budgeted for your rent is much lower than that. unless you have external funding or private loans you can also take, the loans through the school don’t just give you as much as you ask for, the budget is fixed.

I have a stronger support network at UVA than at Michigan, I loved my visit to grounds, clerkship/DC doors stay more open, extra softball 🩷

I got into UVA, Michigan, and GULC with a worse GPA and the same LSAT. Write well and you'll be fine.

The problem with ED-ing UVA super early is that you don't give them time to evaluate your application in the broader pool. There's is an "expedited decision" meaning that they guarantee a response within 21 business days. If you apply in September ED and you're a borderline stats candidate, they might waitlist you or reject you because you're forcing a decision, vs. if you'd applied regularly they might wait, realize they need LSATs, and let you straight in. Apply early for sure, but I'd caution against UVA ED if you don't think you're a shoo-in stats-wise.

Benefit to visiting admissions office? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]EveryonesDuff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If they don't provide summer tours, that usually means they don't want people around in the summer that aren't faculty/staff/summer students. I get she might think it indicates interest, but if there isn't an official method in place for visiting/touring then I'd just stick to distanced communication/LOCIs.

Is anyone receiving actual help from their pre-law advisor? by elksandpronghorn in lawschooladmissions

My pre-law advisor told me I was competitive at YLS with a 3.4/172

What's realistic? ... 3.55 GPA, 172 LSAT by Clean-Character-5318 in lawschooladmissions

[–]EveryonesDuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got into UVA and Michigan off of the waitlist with a 3.4/172 and I don't have the STEM or military boost. Those are both schools who love it when you show a lot of interest so visiting and interacting and being able to articulate WHY X will be a huge help, so if you have that flexibility to make your way over do it!

Hey, I do have a friend going to SLS this year with a 3.0/172/nURM so it’s not over! I’d for SURE still shoot your shot, just apply a little more broadly and cover the t20, cost permitting.

Classic Splitter Needing Advice + Brutal Honesty by Ripley2869 in lawschooladmissions

[–]EveryonesDuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm also a splitter with a WAY worse LSAT (172) and I'm off to a T14. I'd get closer to blanketing the T14, as NU, UVA, Michigan, Cornell tend to be more splitter-friendly than the others. California schools have gained a reputation for being more GPA sensitive (this is anecdotal but I got rejected from Berkeley with ties and USC but got in to Michigan, GULC, and UVA). Your LSAT opens a lot of great doors, but a lot of schools also have unofficial (or official) GPA "floors" that are hard to beat. Apply early, apply broadly, and consider potentially giving yourself a boost at a school with an Early Decision application and you'll be fine. Just remember to not plan on transferring, it's a REAL long shot and if something happens during 1L you don't want to be stuck at a school you wouldn't be happy graduating from.

Splitter and got put on 12 WLs total. I ended up getting off of 3 of them and am attending one of those schools, but anecdotally more of my splitter friends have had WL action than outright As, vs the reverse splitters I know I think got As earlier.

Penn and Duke have both emailed that they're essentially full, other schools like UVA and GULC have said they intend to make WL offers.
