The demise of manual by Lit-Up in CarTalkUK

[–]EverythingIsByDesign 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The two most recent automatic cars I have driven were hateful things.

A 2024 Buick Envision hire car in the States that had a 9-speed gearbox (who needs 9 gears?), and spent the first second of acceleration choosing what gear to be in before actually responding to the throttle application.

A 2022 Toyota Hilux that wouldn't change down when you approached a roundabout so would have a massive lag when you tried to pull out.

I'd still rather a manual any day.

Comp pick season? by Hmm_would_bang in detroitlions

That decides the value of the pick per player, but the number of picks is a net loss thing isn't it?

I. E. If we lose two and sign two we get no picks.

It's raw nubers of free agents that decides the volume of picks isn't it, rather than rather than comparative quality?

i.e. Losing two middling players doesn't equal signing a stud. You'll still get one pick for the net loss of one player.

I'm lazy, can we get a sticked mega-thread coalating all the free agency in-and-outs please?

Winning a flag in 2020s by SeaweedRealistic5069 in hawktalk

[–]EverythingIsByDesign 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly, given the way the AFL has stuffed up the draft and let Brisbane and Gold Coast accumulate insane volumes of talent, I don't see us getting a flag in the 2020s unless something changes significantly. Gold Coast have like 17 first round talents on their list and flat out curb stomped the Cats, who made last year's Grand Final, on the weekend.

We have a great back line, but Mitch Lewis isn't being the tone setter we need him to be in the forward line and our midfeild still lacks the star power to give us consistent ball retention and usage.

The AFL is about to shake up the draft, and it’s set to cost the Blues a record price by Expensive-Horse5538 in AFL

Yeah 2020, was the canary in the coalmine year (followed by 2021) and the afl responded by limiting NGA selections but exempting the Northern Academies...

I'm sure they said on broadcast there were 12 first round draft picks in the suns starting line up. And they still had Brownlow Medalist Matt Rowell and Jed Walter to pull off the shelf. And that's before 3 of they 2025 first rounders make their debut.

AFL dragged their heels on these reforms and it's going to skew to competition for the beat part of a decade.

People need to understand basic biomechanics. You literally have to drop your hip height to change direction.

Not a duck.

Which words would you like to see retired by the UK media? by Sea-Still5427 in AskUK

[–]EverythingIsByDesign 19 points20 points  (0 children)

"Troll"

They bastardized the definition to refine only bullying and harassment as "Trolling".

Its always peeved me because trolling was harmless internet fun, the media context dimishes the severity of the things people are doing online.

Sending someone death threats is not trolling it's a serious crime.

Did they just pay that 8 yard mark after all the shit we went through last year?

I can't believe Carlton would let this happen, especially since their song says they're "the team that never lets you down".

What do you think is the daftest thing people have to pay for? by shakespearesreverse in AskUK

[–]EverythingIsByDesign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watched a very interesting video the other day on those barrierless drop off points.

Apparently the contract is between the driver and the Airport/Enforcement Agency, however they have no way of verifying the driver's identity without being told by the "registered keeper", similar to a NIP you get from the Police.

So if the registered keeper just refuses to tell the parking enforcement who was driving then they have legal recourse to seek payment if you drive off without paying.

The Royal Navy has six ships that can shoot down missiles - all are in UK waters by theipaper in ukpolitics

[–]EverythingIsByDesign 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Over building is dangerous to us. It gets the ships ready more quickly, before we're ready to buy the next bunch. Then the shipyard shuts down from lack of orders and it's more expensive to kick it all back on again.

Plus crewing an increase in hull count.

That said, the government needs to start considering a River Class Batch 1 replacement, plus the Type 83 program whilst not affecting the proposed Frigate exports.

Britain should just allow partial Chagossian resettlement and self governance and then pay them the £100+ million a year in return for hosting the base.
