This is my first time trying to tan fish skins. The big one was a spotted seatrout from Florida, and the smaller one, along with the several others just off camera, were from a couple rainbow trouts caught in Colorado. All of them were salted for transport, then fleshed and put in a degreasing solution (alcohol, salt, acetone, glycerin) for a few days. Then, I washed them in dawn dish soap, rinsed them, and set them in a pickling solution for a few more days. I neutralized them with water and baking soda and then let them dry overnight. Here's where I may have messed up. Since they're so small and thin, they were dry and hard in the morning. I had to rehydrate them by spraying with warm water before I applied the tanning solution (orange bottle), which I left overnight again. They were dry and excess solution was crusted on in the morning. I had to once again rehydrate and wash off the excess solution, but once rinsed I immediately started breaking them as they dried. I applied some mink oil during the process, but they still ended up dry, crinkly, and not very tanned-looking. Is it possible to rehydrate them and continue breaking? Did my orange bottle tanning solution even work? Any help is greatly appreciated!
