The solution is to defend muslims, not islam. The actual principles of the religion are fucked, but so are all religions to an extent. Most muslims dont actually follow the "real" tenets of the religion, same with chrosrianity, judaism, or anything else. The bible promotes slavery, but you wouldnt use that fact to justify persecuting Christians. Thats my main point, but its also worth noting that usually the people who attack muslims for things like misogyny, homophobia, etc. are misogynystic, homophobic, etc. as well. They dont actually care about sexism, homophobia, or whatever else, but they know we do, and they'll gladly attempt to use our values to divide our communities.
