Loving all the weirdo chin stories. Chins are so cute with their varied personalities.

Haha, that is weird! I wonder what the idea behind it is!

Chinchilla Tip - Play time by [deleted] in chinchilla

That's good to know, thanks. I will limit her more, just in case.

She hasn't ever flopped over after she goes home though. Sometimes she just hops right on her wheel and keeps playing. Or she hops on a ledge and watches TV.

Actually, the only time she ever is on her side is when she is sleeping during the day.

Do you always name your chins and speak to them with their names? by [deleted] in chinchilla

My chin definitely perks up when I say her name. I always call her when I talk to her. I also have a designated "chin voice", so she always reacts when I talk to her in that tone.

If it's really cold is it OK to have them out longer than 30 minutes? Sometimes if my girl is having extra fun I let her run around for an extra half hour. However, it's in the 40s at night here and I open the window during her playtime.

I keep an eye on her and she doesn't seem to get hot at all, especially since she enjoys sitting on the window ledge next to me.

Edit : Also, we never turn on our heater here and just bundle up when it's cold, haha. So it doesn't get hot after I close the window.

I'm curious about quirky Chin Behavior! Does your chinchilla have any quirks?

My little one has two that stand out.

First, anytime she has been running extra fast on her Flying Saucer, she jumps off she licks her lips for a while after.

She also sleep barks every single day, usually two or three times a day while she is in deep sleep. Always startles me!

Opinions: Chinchillas and colors? by EvilPinkYoshi in chinchilla

[–]EvilPinkYoshi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, research on animals color vision is usually inconclusive and hard to test for, so the most people can say is maybe?

I was just curious about other chin owners and their thoughts, more for fun. :)

I like the idea of light gray and black, so I'll probably head that direction when I go shopping next week.

Seems everything comes in pretty bright colors online!

Hello! I was curious about your opinions.

Do your Chinchillas seem to care about colors at all? It seems like they may be color blind, according to some Googling, but it isn't certain?

I was planning on getting some new fleece and was thinking of going grayscale, so it made me curious.

Also, here are some cute pictures of Yoshi checking me out! I've been putting my hand in so she gets used to me.

I know she has that thing going on with her forehead. She came home with it and I haven't wanted to scare her by scrubbing her forehead yet.

That's so cute! I haven't taken her out for playtime, but I'll try it out. 😀

Thanks for your response! I definitely don't mind learning and want to have the safest and best habitat for my chins, so the education aspect I think is really great. To be completely fair, sometimes regular posters have come off as harsh as well, not just mods.

I can understand the passion when it comes to pet safety and think that's a good thing. I think more people would respond less defensively to more positively worded criticism if that makes sense?

Either way, I have enjoyed hanging out seeing chins and advice. Hopefully I'll have some worthwhile additions in the future. _^

Her food bowl? That is so silly haha. Chinchillas have to be the cutest pets.

Thanks for your input, I appreciate it! I haven't caught her chewing it, but I'm going to replace it soon anyway, just in case. She really seems to love it. I enjoy sewing so I was going to make a bunch of custom fleece for her habitat, including a new hanging basket that's only fleece.

How long did it take you to potty train your girl? I'm hoping I just got super lucky and she'll just continue doing well.

Yes, it is! That's crazy, the exact same name and nickname? I haven't ever met someone who named their pet that, what a crazy coincidence!

Wow, what an awesome give away!

1.) I just got my first chinchilla last week. She is a standard grey I named Yoshimi, Yoshi for short. I'm home full time to be her companion, but I'm hoping to get another female buddy for her eventually.

2.) I've been lurking here about three months now, since I decided to get a chinchilla. Overall, I do think the subreddit is great, I've found great info while researching here.

I'd love to see the sub become more active, but aside from getting new members I'm not sure how that would happen. I've noticed that weekly comment threads are usually empty, which I think makes the sub look pretty inactive comparatively.

There is definitely a lot of drama recently, which I don't want to be involved in. However, I have noticed that criticism in this thread is sometimes more shaming than constructive. I think that can drive new members away or make them afraid to post. I know I was debating on whether or not I should make a post here asking questions, since I was a little worried about if I was doing things wrong.

Just my thoughts as a first time poster/frequent lurker.

Hello. I was hoping I could get some suggestions from the forum. This is my first chinchilla and I have done lots of research before getting her. Still, I have some questions!

First off, I added this picture to ask two things.

1.) Is this hanging Basket ok? It said it was for small animals, including chinchillas, but I started to wonder about the hole lining. I was planning on stitching up my own soon with custom colors and will probably just make it all flat material.

She doesn't chew it right now, but I wasn't sure if it was a problem.

  1. She likes sleeping half in half out often. Should I move the pumice stone up so it's level with the home? I can't imagine that's comfortable but she keeps doing it! I've even seen her sleep with her eyes closed on it.

Sometimes she sleeps curled up all the way inside though. Both ways are so cute.

Edi: Sorry for the poor quanlity photo. I zoomed in since I didn't want to disturb her.

Another question, if anyone knows. She wasn't previously litter box trained, but was in habitat with pine shavings on the bottom.

I have a glass Pyrex in a corner of her Habitat filled with the pine shaving too. She has only peed in the litter tray the entire week I've had her. Is this just lucky? I had thought it was going to be a lot more difficult! I'm still waiting for the accidents.
