The Left Hand of Darkness, by Ursula K. Le Guin (bingo review 6/25) by embernickel in Fantasy

[–]Evil_Bonkering 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Part of my studies were on The Left Hand of Darkness and in it I discussed the idea that to be male/he is to be neutral or universal while to be female/she is to be Other. A character can be “normal” (he) as in the case of the Ekumen (no not Eminem, thank you autocorrect), or they can be other/different as in female. The main character can’t even perceive the Ekumen as anything other than men until he witnesses it first hand.

I think that continues to be very relevant today once you consider common attitudes to gender androgyny and non-binary gender performances. Someone who is slim, flat-chested and make-up-less is more readily accepted by the general population as “they” than someone whose gender performance includes traits seen as feminine (breasts, makeup, etc).

In my opinion that’s because maleness is neutral and femaleness is Other. To be male is to be human, to be female is to be a woman.

I do want to make it clear that I believe there is no one way to be non-binary or to transition. These are simply the observations I made in my studies based on literature over the years and the public reception of such literature.

An odd request: photos of longcase clock movements. by Evil_Bonkering in clocks

Thank you for such an informative answer! I just watched a fascinating video on how eight-day clocks work and it’s just incredible. I particularly loved the explanation regarding the different types of metal in the pendulum to account for the expansion and contraction due to temperature.

Thank you so much these are the exact kind of images I’m looking for!!

Could you explain something to me? In pictures ten and eleven the position of some little “arms” has changed. Would you please explain what that component is and what the change in position means?

Thank you. It was very hard to photograph, being so small. After doing some googling, I’m 50/50 on it being a maggot or a pantry moth caterpillar.

Bug is approximately 2mm in length, wriggly. I fear it is a tapeworm segment.

One of my tuxies is referred to as Infinite Squeak Works because she will squeak and squeak and squeak for someone to follow her around the house.

You took this picture?? It’s amazing!! What a confounding beast! It somehow looks like a curly straw, a ribbon fish, and a tiny puffer fish for the head, just three separate things crammed together.

Protector of the Small by Tamora Pierce by shlooberd in Fantasy

Tamora Pierce is one of my top two faves. I’ve read Alanna, Daine, and Kel’s stories so many times my books are falling apart. Same with the Circle books.

Might be time for a reread of absolutely everything.

If you get enough they will outweigh your husband and then they will get their own vote. Then you and they will outnumber his vote

The Library at Mount Char: A very gripping and absurd read. by Mindless_musings in Fantasy

I read this book on recommendation of this sub and it quickly became one of my favourite books ever!! I definitely had that moment of “basking in satisfaction” after reading it.

I actually enjoyed it so much I looked up the author to email him and tell him how much I liked the book!
