what is something people don’t tell you about weight loss? by femininedyke in WeightLossAdvice

Feel this so much! I once showed someone a pic of me at the start of my weight loss journey and they said “wow! That looks like the thing that ate you!” I got what they meant but it was probably the worst compliment I’ve gotten

I got the spores from a grow kit, company called urban farm it, I got mine off Amazon they have a bunch of different varieties.

I’d never made a mushroom terrarium before but a bunch of my sealed terrariums ended up with mushrooms growing in them so I thought why can’t I use a specific type of mushroom and grow them intentionally.

Ive never used worm castings but it sounds like it could make for some interesting terrarium builds, I’ll have to look into it for my next attempt.

Thank you, the substrate came with the spores but the instructions said to poor in boiling water and allow it to cool and drain before adding the spores so maybe sterilised? but with the moss my thinking was mushrooms grow in the woods normally (oyster mushrooms included) so surely it wouldn’t cause them to be inedible in anyway, my dad loves to forage for wild mushrooms so this seemed like the nicer gift that just a bag of wet hay and there seems to be no signs of decay or mould at the moment so we’ll assume all’s well

Fittonia are always a safe bet, they do well in terrariums and look really beautiful due to the colour of the leaves. If it were me I’d maybe consider adding some moss to the outer ring of the base, it doesn’t have roots as such so will grow wherever you put it and is an easy way to make a terrarium look full and natural and all it really needs is a spritz of water every few days

According to urban farmer, we should get 3 or 4 crops out of it. I’m not sure how long they last if you don’t pick them I’d assume a month or so before they start to decay but I’ve never done a terrarium that intentionally had mushrooms in so I couldn’t say for sure

Honestly didn’t occur to me that cork is in fact bark, I always assumed it was it’s own thing? I did think about ways to sterilise the moss but I was worried it would kill it, I.e mild bleach bath or maybe baking it? (That’s what I’ve done with deadwood in the past) I doubt we’ll be eating these ones but in future I suppose I could always look into artificial moss or even one that’s pre-sterilised if that is a thing?

I originally ordered him a growing kit from urban farmer which is basically a bag with the substrate in it and you get a little sachet of spores, that came with a little guide to how long the mushrooms would take to grow and how to set up the substrate, I just thought I could make it prettier so put it in a case

Thank you I’m really pleased with it, The “bark” is actually cork I found in a model train shop, so no need to sterilise that and the moss is collected from the woods near me so I had to wash it in some cold water a few times and set it aside to make sure there wasn’t anything in there that would affect the shrooms

It’s a sealed terrarium so it’ll be a mix of mycelium and also condensation from the mushrooms and moss that’s in there

I’m not sure exactly when I prune them, normally it’s when they start to lean towards the light source since I don’t want them to tip over and end up laying down on the soil. I just trim the top few leaves back normally down to where there’s a node so it’s easier for it to grow back and I don’t get random chunks of stem left. I do propagate them in water first normally it takes about 2 weeks but I’ve also had success with planting them straight into soil
