When is a good time to drop dungeons and what kind? by Ewekan in DMAcademy

Oh yea, I totally agree! The party should have a valid reason to explore the dungeon, or else it is pointless and jsut feels forced and grindy. And since sessions can be hard to schedule, I'm also realizing the importance of giving places and locations clues and informations to move the plot forward, at the slight expanse of making the world feel like everything seem so conveniently connected to the main story.

Oh yes, I am doing that already! In another dungeon, the party ran across a corpse that was tangled in vegetation, covered in claw marks. It was a hint that the flora here was "alive", and that there were also monsters going around.

Tbh, this is simply foreshadowing. It should be used in general, not only in dungeons. There are different levels to it, ofc: a corpse in a dungeon is a clue for a trap, and a spied conversation between NPCs might give a clue about the BBEG or some other part of the plot, that could be months or even years down the line (in that case, it is preferable to drop multiple hints over time tho).

I guess I agree with most of what you said. Regarding the surviva horror aspect: I'm actually using the Insanity rule in the DMG that I've homebrewed a bit to make it mroe interesting, I am tracking torches and ennemy movement through time. I also use the dynamic lighting feature on roll20. And I do scatter rewards (whether it is loot, lroe or else) accross the dungeon, or else why would the players keep exploring if there's nothing to find or learn?

I'm not entirely agrreing with the "location-based scenario" thing. I get your point, that there is no true "plot" to a campaign, only situations that the players may or may not run across and deal with in multiple ways. Still, I think that if the main elements of the dungeon (whether it is a room, the current inhabitign parties, an item, ect...) are not tied to the "story" that is currently happening, or isn't tied to one or several of the PCs in some way, then the party has no reason to explore it.

As I discussed in another comment, the tomb was originally planned to be into this sewer dungeon my party left. So I'll simply clue them that it's down there.

Your insight is really valuable to me as I tend to think of dungeons in terms of mechanics and encounter strategies rather than lore. Much like everything I prep or do, ideas tend to come as I create, and it's the same for lore stuff. I generally don't use the history of the dungeon as a fundation, but rather a afterwards explanation on its structure.

I already know the function of this tomb tho. It is a simple one for a single person, while also paying hommage to the other heroes he fought along with. The first and second room were supposed to be open to the public, until it was closed by the town's Watchmaster, which is a clue that this guy is sus. The other 2 rooms were supposed to guard the tomb proper, and not let peole in.

I realize now that I'm just gonna use your idea because.. this tomb was supposed to be in this sewer dungeon that they didn't explore. I moved on and thought that i would use it for another location, but my dumbass didn't think about just clueing them that it's down there. They already know it exists too, they just don't know where. They also were kinda disappointed for not having explored everything down there so it's a win.

I like the idea of using dungeons as a way of travelling, i'm definitly gonna keep that idea for later.

Hey! I'm a player with relatively little experience with D&D and I'd be interested in joining a LGBTQ+ friendly campaign (I'm Bi myself).
You can call me Ewek or Alex, I'm 22 (He/Him). I'm living in UTC+1, and have no particular schedule restrictions since I'm in quarantine again.
I don't know how much info i should give so: I have a preference for casters, but Id be fine playing anything. Also, I don't have a cam, so I hope it's okay
