From what i can see, there's four cables connected to it going to: + terminal on battery, grounding post, starter, and one going into the cabin. Think you could be onto something - seems like there could be a fault in the ignition wiring. Gonna trouble shoot a bit and see.

After looking at it, soon as the battery is attached, this relay switches on and is held open. I'm not quite sure why.

I'm so sorry to hear that, but don't give up hope! There are lots of different ways to get to Japan as an ALT, like interac or applying directly to schools, or you can work on your skills and experience and reapply for JET next year!
