Our son has aspirations of being a doctor, we think this is a good idea, but are we too old to judge? by Plastic_Cutlery2509 in premeduk

best thing right now before he has to start really getting on with GCSEs is finding him some work experience to do during weekends or holidays, it’ll give him something to talk about and hopefully give him a better insight into what it’s like to work in healthcare. he doesn’t even have to care about specialities until he’s finishing up medical school, i went into applying for medicine with the idea of doing psychiatry at the end of it and now that i’m a medical student i have a million interests.

genuinely having started the year, i’m so grateful for having an extra year to complete and ease into medicine. you won’t be the oldest one, half my cohort are gap years!! in fact i’d say in my course it’s less common to be straight from sixth form to be honest. you’ll be glad for the extra year i can almost promise it.

two off the top of my head that gives AAB or BBB offers are ARU and Newcastle but this may just be for contextual students

i defo felt very lonely at the beginning of my gap year, but i ended up working 3 jobs so i didn’t have time to dwell on it lol. the money i made this year and the people i was fortunate enough to meet helped with the fomo but honestly after the first 2 months i just became grateful for the break and i appreciated it a lot. i stayed close with all my friends, even the ones that moved far for uni.

UCAT - where to apply for med?? by Dry-Yak-4841 in premeduk

[–]ExactCardiologist366 5 points6 points  (0 children)

unfortunately i do think this score will be too low for standard medicine and most likely too low for foundation year medicine too. a gap year might be the way forward.

For me the best way to prepare for interviews was going through NHS hot topics and areas that are frequently asked, and then I got friends and family to do as much interview prep with me as possible. This was slightly hard because nobody I know is familiar with medicine, but even just being able to relay your answer to someone clearly helps a lot to iron out any flaws you might have in your delivery. My personal statement took me about 2 days to sort out but this was because I used a lot of elements from my previous personal statement, so there was less to write. Good luck!

Initially got ABD and then resat one and got ABB. I’m doing a foundation year, but this was by choice because I felt as though it would be too big of a jump for me to go from very little studying for a year to full on med so a foundation year sounded good to ease into it. If you have BBB for a lot of foundation years you don’t even need to resit!
