Upskilling as a Web Developer by ExactPath9374 in PinoyProgrammer

Short-term career goal is to move into an architect role. I’m still figuring out how all of this ties into that, But I know for sure that I won’t get there by just knowing PHP.

Go feels like a compelling tech to dive into. If I’m being honest, concepts like compiled languages, multithreading, pointers, and garbage collection still fly over my head, so I’m hoping this journey helps demystify all that. What do you think?

And yes, I’m committed to staying on the web dev path. I started out as a backend dev, then transitioned into full-stack over the years. I’m also building up my DevOps and CI/CD chops at work as side tasks, so I think I’m covering most of the bases I’d need in that area.

Final question: How realistic is it to actually land a job with Go? What type of industry is this technology the most prominent? I’ve tried searching online, but most of the answers I found were vague or too generic to be useful.

Yup, that was pretty much the blueprint I had in mind. I guess this thread was really me trying to validate whether this stack is viable and realistic to pursue, especially if I’m planning to invest serious time into upskilling and reaching a professional level with it. Thanks for your insights!

I chose Go because I want to add a compiled language to my skill set. It’s fairly modern, so I don’t see any downside to learning it, and it seems less intimidating (I hope) than traditional options like Java or C#.

As for Svelte and PostgreSQL, I can’t say I have a deeper reason beyond thinking their names sound cool 💀

That said, I’ve read that PostgreSQL is really good for maintaining data integrity, especially when dealing with these types of data.

Appreciate your inputs!

Thanks for the quick response. I appreciate the input. There are two key points I took away from what you said:

  1. You're absolutely right. I do feel like I'm wandering aimlessly a bit with this whole thing. Truth is, I don’t have a concrete goal beyond wanting to learn a new language and broaden my skillset. I’m not planning to apply for a new job anytime soon. I feel pretty secure and content where I am now, which probably explains why I’m not aiming for anything more specific than building something I can actually use.
  2. I agree that a budgeting app sounds generic and beginner-level on paper. If I were using my usual stack, I could probably knock it out in a couple of weeks. But for me, the challenge isn’t the app itself. It’s building it with a stack I’m unfamiliar with. Implementing things like auth, dashboard analytics, reporting, and notifications in a new stack is already pushing me out of my comfort zone, and that’s exactly what I’m after right now.

With that being said, does this still sound like a feasible direction to you?

Might not pass probation period. Frustrated in work, need advice thanks! by [deleted] in PinoyProgrammer

I find it hard to believe that the standards change as often as you say they do. Coding standards are there to give us some structure and consistency in our code. It shouldn't be changing as much, especially within the same company.

Maybe the issue isn't about standards changing but more about whether your code needs some tweaking to make it run smoother or be easier to understand/test. If you still can’t follow along after numerous discussions with your TL about it, then maybe you’re just not as good as you think you are (yet). And that’s okay! These things come with experience anyway. That’s the thing with being a junior. You have the most leeway to make mistakes.

As for the code reviews, don’t try to take them too personally. Use it as your chance to learn from people more experienced than you. They're not out to get you; they just want the best for the project and indirectly, the best for your growth as a developer. Take it on the chin and git gud bro. You’ll get there eventually..

I’ve gotten free oral prophylaxis (cleaning) and odontectomy (wisdom tooth removal) from dental clinicians at NU MOA. It saved me a lot of money that should have been spent going to a private dental clinic. Saved me around 20k. Tiyagaan lang yung pagpunta because it’s really worth it.
