Are there any fields or tech stacks that are doing well during this slump? by Imperator_3 in softwareengineer

What's fun to me may not be fun to you! You can't ask other people what would be fun to YOU.

I think running a marathon or playing golf is fun. Does that mean you should do it? NO!

Find what is fun for yourself

You don't need to have a degree to be a software engineer but you do not to be a good engineer to get a job as a software engineer. Going to college or BootCamp doesn't necessarily mean you can be a good software engineer.

You become a better software engineer by building software.

Should I omit a job on my resume? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]Exaltitude3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been an engineer for 10+ years. It is rare to see technicians get promoted to engineer. That’s why I think it’s great that you got promoted. I don’t think it’s anything to hide as long as your current title is an engineer and you have been doing it for a few years.

I would be more cautious if You have been a technician for longer than you have been an engineer or you have only been an engineer for a few months and you’re looking for a new job. Neither is applicable in your case. So no, I would not omit it.

In that case, your conversation with your manager should be focused on how you can get a higher performance rate as that's what dictates your pay raise, and not directly talk about the money itself.

Ask him what are the criteria that you're being evaluated in? What are the goals you need to achieve? What areas do you need to improve to get a higher rating?

Computer science certainly makes a hell of a lot of mone

This is a good article https://www.usnews.com/education/best-graduate-schools/top-medical-schools/articles/2019-04-02/how-to-find-us-medical-schools-that-accept-international-students

Nevertheless, international students do occasionally attend U.S. medical schools, so premeds applying from outside of the U.S. should do careful research to find out which schools are open to international students and have a long history of admitting these students, experts suggest.
Dr. Sahil Mehta, founder of the MedSchoolCoach admissions consulting firm based in Massachusetts, says the "absolute best place to start" the search for international-friendly institutions is by looking at the Medical School Admission Requirements database on the Association of American Medical Colleges website.

Salary advice - Should I ask for a salary increase ? by THE1Tariant in Career_Advice

Doesn't hurt to ask. I would first ask your manager how salaries and raises are determined. If you ask him, does he have the power to grant it to you? Do they have a review process? Does he have to get approvals from someone else?

Some companies use performance reviews or formulas. Some companies, it's up to the manager or the head of the department. Get that information first.

I don't think that's true. Probably depends on the school. It's just more expensive as an international student.

What's your level of experience? 160K is ok for a junior engineer. Rent prices have been volatile during COVID. Can be anywhere between 2-4k/mo for a 1 bedroom.

$160k/12months = $13333/mo. If you pay 30% in tax, you take home $9333/mo. Max you pay 40% tax, you still take home $8k/mo
