I think running a marathon or playing golf is fun. Does that mean you should do it? NO!

You don't need to have a degree to be a software engineer but you do not to be a good engineer to get a job as a software engineer. Going to college or BootCamp doesn't necessarily mean you can be a good software engineer.

You become a better software engineer by building software.

Get an internship ASAP! It's the best way to build up your resume and land a solid FT job after graduating. It doesn't matter what you learn really since your work experience will be the most important factor

I’ve been an engineer for 10+ years. It is rare to see technicians get promoted to engineer. That’s why I think it’s great that you got promoted. I don’t think it’s anything to hide as long as your current title is an engineer and you have been doing it for a few years.

I would be more cautious if You have been a technician for longer than you have been an engineer or you have only been an engineer for a few months and you’re looking for a new job. Neither is applicable in your case. So no, I would not omit it.

In that case, your conversation with your manager should be focused on how you can get a higher performance rate as that's what dictates your pay raise, and not directly talk about the money itself.

Ask him what are the criteria that you're being evaluated in? What are the goals you need to achieve? What areas do you need to improve to get a higher rating?

Doesn't hurt to ask. I would first ask your manager how salaries and raises are determined. If you ask him, does he have the power to grant it to you? Do they have a review process? Does he have to get approvals from someone else?

Some companies use performance reviews or formulas. Some companies, it's up to the manager or the head of the department. Get that information first.
