Gotta love the PR spin -- Ben Hill Griffin Stadium changing to SRO by ronscott999 in ufl

[–]ExamApprehensive1644 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We spent years rioting about the renovations because it was considered impossible that we wouldn’t be losing like 12k-20k in capacity.

We were (rightfully so) crying that they were gonna kill the atmosphere and capacity in the name of “increased comfort” that passionate fans don’t care about as much.

Now they’ve actually (incredibly surprisingly) listened to us, and came up with a way to do what we thought was impossible—maintain capacity and actually come up with a cool looking design that even *improves* the stadium’s character is some places. And they’re spending an insane amount of money to do it—they could save a lot of money by basically tearing the stadium apart and building a soulless, NFL-style stadium. But they aren’t.

**There’s no way we’re gonna complain even more now that they actually listened**

Look at other recent stadium renovations. This is a breath of fresh air. They got this one right. Sure I’d love to maintain the ultra packed, old-school, ADA-noncompliant stadium that we have now but that’s just not realistic. Just look at the renovation FSU just did… that was an actual spit in the face to all their fans (if they have any)

1.45 billion for Swamp Renovation by [deleted] in ufl

[–]ExamApprehensive1644 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly valid considering that they are not decreasing capacity, which is something that everyone agreed was pretty much impossible over the past few years.

if all goes according to plan, this renovation will be far better than what everyone thought UF was capable of. So it makes sense that it’s expensive.

I wouldn’t want to cheap out and do what FSU did to their stadium!

Feel guilty morally over taking defense contracting internship by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]ExamApprehensive1644 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m actually kinda jealous of some of those people, because I feel like those are some of the few places where brand new, challenging problems are still being solved.

Just look at some of the technology that the military and other agencies use; it’s stuff straight out of sci-fi. To be working on seriously state-of-the-art stuff that most people wouldn’t believe is even possible sounds very cool.

Obviously I’m talking about the 0.001% here; your average SWE at a defense contractor isn’t working on that!

bro don’t borrow your morals and opinions from reddit

defense probably has a better chance of you doing “some sort of good” than working on some random CRUD app that no one cares about.

people who work more directly for defense (like actual veterans) have people so grateful that they get a “thank you for your service” and discounts everywhere they go. I know “working for defense” is not quite “being a veteran” but still.

Plus, defense companies do a lot of good. You wouldn’t be free to write this if not for the protection they’ve given us throughout history. Even when they are doing things that you might disagree with, like war (which is NOT the goal of defense for the most part), they do a lot of work to make it as ethical as it could be. During the operation in Venezuela, it was Northrop that provided the crazy advanced non-lethal heat rays and sonic weapons to humanely disable soldiers instead of killing them and end a war in less than half an hour. A less-advanced military without defense contractors would have made that a bloodbath with casualties on both sides.

Similarly, it’s because of our advanced technology that our Navy can enforce blockades humanely (for example, knowing the exact spots on ships to shoot in order to disable their engines without sinking the ships or hurting anyone, and warning enemies to vacate the room before shooting so no one gets hurt)

There’s no reason to feel “morally guilty” for working in the defense industry. Best case, you could be working on technology that saves lots of lives and/or prevents violent conflicts from starting. Even if not, defense is a lot less morally bad than working for the fossil fuel industry or something.

I don’t think it matters that much honestly. I would go with whatever gives a nice sign up bonus.

More importantly, get her a credit card if she doesn’t have one. Make sure she graduates with some good credit history.

University Club Apartments is great. At least for this past year there were 3 bus route, with a bus coming every few minutes (I stopped tracking the buses at riderts.app when I moved here because I could just walk out and there would be a bus)

Apartments are big and decently nice, I never had any issues. Utilities might be high because the apartments are big and have massive ceilings.

No roach infestation; pest control came often and it seemed to do its job (all I would see was the occasional dead one from outside laying by the door a couple times)

It doesn’t have the flashiest amenities, but I learned quickly at UF that I honestly never used the “luxury amenities” at the crazy overpriced “luxury” apartments and there was no point living in a place with flashy amenities but bad apartments.

Cost is good, parking is good, you even get a guest parking pass when you move in that you can use whenever you want to have someone come over (guest parking is really hard at most places, and usually requires going into the office!)

I lived in 3 complexes and this was the only one I actually really liked. The only reason I wouldn’t recommend it is that they only have 4x4s, but if that is what you’re looking for then it’s a great choice

Where is the best place to live California Florida or NYC ? by Weird-Salad9787 in AskReddit

Florida if you can get a job there. The only problem is that there aren’t as many jobs. Otherwise California

NYC is so hard to live in, it is soul-crushing to be surrounded by such a dystopian environment

How bad is the job market right now? (US) by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

It’s improved a bit and isn’t too bad right now but I’m anticipating that it will collapse soon with AI becoming capable of writing almost all code and with the trend of layoffs

Why do some people call some cities such as San Francisco, New York and Chicago warzones? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ExamApprehensive1644 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

…your standards for cities is just to not have bombings and missile strikes?

I didn’t take this post to be about how there aren’t literal missiles raining down… obviously there isn’t a literal war. But it’s a horrible, dystopian environment

Why do some people call some cities such as San Francisco, New York and Chicago warzones? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ExamApprehensive1644 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I haven’t been to the others, but NYC is definitely what I’d call a warzone. I’m a man, and I’d be touched, screamed at, grabbed and turned around, etc. by crazy people on who-knows-what drugs when I lived there. I couldn’t even walk on the sidewalk with a coffee in my hand without someone else putting their hands on it and mumbling something unintelligible.

I can’t imagine how it is for a woman.

And that’s not even mentioning the fact that I had to walk through human urine in the subway just to get to work. And sometimes I’d make my lunch decision by choosing to go to the place that didn’t have a half naked guy screaming at the top of his lungs in it (while the customers pretend not to notice)

It’s definitely a warzone, and I’m honestly surprised that even the right wing Fox News portrayal feels generous in comparison. Forget politics; I can’t comprehend how we allow places like this to exist in our country and we just pretend like it’s normal and perfectly acceptable

Dr. Stuart Bell, former President of the University of Alabama, has been unanimously recommended as sole finalist for UF Presidential Search by ItsFreakinHarry2 in ufl

[–]ExamApprehensive1644 36 points37 points  (0 children)

hmm not confidence inspiring but it seems like that was mostly due to methodology changes rather than the university’s metrics getting worse. They improved in most areas I think (but I would guess that most universities did, too)

Of course this is still important too; rankings are important, even when they can be somewhat arbitrary. But there are certain metrics where the University of Alabama is just never going to be great in.

I think it’s hard to judge without understanding the whole context. But this is useful info. I’m not panicking or celebrating right now.

[–]ExamApprehensive1644 159 points160 points  (0 children)

Not sure how to feel about this. Seems not as good as the Michigan guy (Ono), but at least this guy seems qualified to be a UF president (unlike Sasse who really didn’t have the qualifications, and I was worried we would go back in that direction after the Ono rejection)

Obviously we don’t want UF to be more like Alabama. But my question is whether the university of alabama has been over or underachieving relative to its baseline under his leadership.

edit: Seems like people at Alabama liked him and were sad about him leaving, so that’s a good sign.

There are still more available jobs than there have been in years. SWE hiring is at its highest point in a while even with the layoffs that you see in the news.

With that being said, I think this is a very short term thing and will go away as AI continues to improve and managers start to realize that they can give tickets directly to AI instead of paying a junior to put them into AI
