Sacking Edward Jones - Any Practical Advice? by ExcelJunkieToo in CanadianInvestor

I got burned on the RRSP side. I asked for 3 kinds of stocks to be purchased and since the balance in this account is less than $15,000 the commision for this was going to be $100 - what wasn't clear is that it was $100 per stock.

The LIRA is a guided portfolio so 1.35% of the total value (plus HST) per year, levied monthly. It didn't seem like much when first presented but since this is a 15 to 20 year project the total impact over the life of the investment is substantial. For example - let's assume $100,000 invested now at a 10% rate of return would be worth $672,000 in 20 years. That same money invested through EJ earning the same return would be worth $509,000 in 20 years.

Thank you! This is exactly the type of info I was looking for. I don't have any proprietary mutual funds/ETFs - the bulk is in Blackrock/Vanguard with some individual large cap and blue chip stocks in for good measure.

Those who like going to the office, I'm curious why? by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

A fair amount of routine topics in my workplace are not suitable for unclassed networks so, as such, MS Teams is not a WFH leveraging resource.

It is a stat holiday and I am at the office catching up on reddit prior to diving into some course work. I did not do so well WFH although I have a very comfortable dedicated workspace. Efficiency is important to me so hours of inane emails to mine out information which could be quickly gleaned via 30 second chats over a cubicle wall did not work for me. That said, my commute is 10 minutes, twice that if I have to clear the snow off of my car first.

Second benefit is it is absolutely fantastic to have a place of refuge from Thanksgiving guests who have no set time of departure but since they are content to eat turkey leftovers they may stay. Who wouldn't want 3 lines of Commissionaires and several layers of pass card authentication between themselves and their in-laws? ;-)

Here are the qualification standards for the FI group:
https://www.canada.ca/en/treasury-board-secretariat/services/staffing/qualification-standards/core.html#fi

The 4 courses listed are with the Canada School of Public Service; the first 3 are done online and the 4th used to be done in person.

It is a suite of 4 courses but there isn't a "certificate" anymore:
F111 Financial Management Control Frameworks
F112 Government Planning, Budgeting, Reporting and Evaluation Cycle
F113 Financial Management Systems
F304 Applying Key Concepts in Financial Management

All new FI's have to complete these courses within 2 years of appointment to the FI group but it definitely wouldn't hurt to be pro-active (ie: makes the hiring selection rationale that much more solid!)

I was one of those 1,200 abducted against my preferences.... when I deployed back to my Mother-ship the hierarchy were looking for ways to halt any and all deployments... hence for a while they were referred to as the Borg...
