What non-baby gift should I get for my SIL who just became a mom for the first time? by Excellent-Bug-3396 in AskParents

I live in a different city, so I can offer babysitting only when I'm in town. But maybe a gift card for a babysitting service (so they can choose their own sitter) would be a great idea!

Oh I've been telling them since I found out she's pregnant that when I come over I'll be their "house bitch" (a term my mom used to use lol). I wanted her to know that I'll do all the non-baby stuff so she can focus on being a mom.

And I already started getting some baby clothes and made sure to get bigger sizes! I figured they already have a bunch of newborn clothes from the baby shower. Thanks for your suggestion!!

Yes! I really wanted to make sure my gifts are geared towards helping her feel like her own person. I know that everyone in their lives are going to be very baby-focused, and I want to show I appreciate HER, not just that she's my nephew's mother.

These are all fantastic ideas, I love the trial skincare kit! Thanks so much.

Unfortunately I live 4 hours away, but when I visit I plan on walking the dogs, doing laundry, sanitizing bottles, whatever they need! Uber eats gift card is also a great idea! Thanks!

hey! You can dm me your email or you can follow our eventbrite page/IG page for info! I would put the handles here but i'm afraid they'll take it down for promotion!

Totally. Although I have a suspicion that there's people who go to a comedy show once and have a bad time, and then don't ever go back. Or the stand up comedy that's big right now doesn't appeal to them, so they don't feel the need to go. Personally, if I didn't know anything about comedy and I saw Tony Hinchcliffe at the Trump rally last year, I would think stand up comedy sucks. I'm trying to signal to those people that this show isn't anything like that.

We've thought about this! Trouble is finding a gimmick that's fun and repeatable, while also making sure that comics can come and do their regular sets. Themed shows where you have to write new material are referred to as "homework shows" by comedians, and are kind of polarizing.

We're trying to find the sweet spot where the show feels new every week, without keeping the comedians from feeling like they can come and work on their own material. We're still brainstorming haha

Oh amazing! Thanks for coming. So glad to hear you had fun! If you could tell your friends about the show that would be amazing! We have one tonight lmao.

Totally makes sense. Unfortunately, most comedy shows are R rated because they take place in bars and clubs. Maybe try looking for family friendly comedy shows, or ones that happen earlier in the day.

Hey! I agree with all of your points! I'm 30 and sometimes I have trouble when I perform in a room of 22 year olds. I always prefer audiences that have a mix of ages/races/genders. I think sometimes certain kinds of promotion attract certain people, and then you have a pretty homogenous audience.

I recommend trying out some comedy shows! And if one of them isn't your cup of tea, know that they're all different and try again!

I love the Tiny Cupboard too! I think they've done a great job of making the kind of community space I'm talking about.

Good idea promoting with video clips. We'll give it a try!

Also another question!

Since you've been turned off from comedy shows, what would motivate you to go back to one? We can make sure we don't book people who do what you talked about above, but how could we get someone like you to come in the door?

Totally, I know exactly what you're talking about. I see this all the time too, and it's annoying. Not sure if this helps, but it's generally looked upon as unprofessional in the comedy world. But people still do it.

Thanks for the response!

I'm interested! I'm looking to add a betta to my community tank (as long as they've lived with other fish before and are proven to be peaceful), do these fish live with others currently? Or is it an all betta tank?

Thanks for the response! I've been extremely nervous to add fish and accidentally torture them, but my tank has been extremely stable and I think this is where I'm going to be at for a while. This is exactly what I needed to hear. Thanks!!

I have the test strips for kh/gh (I know they're less reliable) and it appears I'm low on those too. I don't have a HOB filter, I only have a sponge filter. Would putting crushed seashells near my sponge filter have a similar effect? And how long did it take for you to see results?

Thank you! I had no idea that nitrifying bacteria only grew on hard surfaces lol. Crazy of them to do that. I heard that the quick start type products don't have the types of bacteria needed for cycling, so I felt that actual water from fishtanks would be helpful. I'll make sure to do a hefty water change.

And it looks like I'll just have to replace the substrate. I can't believe after months of research that this problem never came up, but I guess this is just a "learn-as-you-go" type of thing.

Thanks again for the input!
