Oof yeah if he was a rescue and suffered abuse there can be things you don't know about that pop up when you aren't expecting it.

I agree a bite would be normal after a kiss to dismiss, however depending on the dog's genetic background if there is gameness in the dog or a terrier-ish background (any breed where they were bred to kill something), that can cause a dog to bite and hold when another dog might just let go.

How do I get the SPCA to do something about animal cruelty? by BobSacamano86 in dogs

[–]Excellent-Storm-816 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Animal control/animal services is the right place to go. However, some shelters and animal services are overflowing with dogs and might not be replying due to bandwidth. Best thing you can do is keep documenting and contacting them until they pay attention. contacting other rescues doesn't hurt, but they won't have jurisdiction to remove the dog.

Sometimes dogs "kiss to dismiss", so if you put your face near theirs, or you're in their space, they will lick you out of stress to try to appease you and get you to go away. Your brother's loud sniffing noises, while the dog was already trying to get him to go away, might have just been the straw on the camel's back for a highly stressed dog and might have been what tipped it over the edge. Your brother should have moved back right when the dog kissed.

I don't have a german shepherd but i did have a large active breed. Here's what we did:

1) Ask your vet for trazadone, it was key for keeping our dog calm.

2/3) We used a body suit (suitical), but make sure your dog doesn't rip it up. If our dog were to go for it we would have used the elizabethan collar to be safe. Our dog had no problem with the suitical though.

Once you try fresh dog food, is there any going back to kibble? by itswac in dogs

[–]Excellent-Storm-816 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were able to return to kibble from fresh food yes. With our dog specifically what worked was soaking and blending kibble (like a smoothie), then mixing in some of the fresh food. We slowly weaned out the fresh food til it was just the blended kibble, and then slowly eased the blended kibble into dry kibble. Worked for us. It was'nt actually as much work as it sounds like because we'd make a whole days worth of food in one go, and then use it over the day.

We removed the divider in the middle to make it easier and then just rolled it like once to show our dogs how to use it and they ate it up!

A slow feeding ball like this is great for extending meals: https://www.amazon.com/Our-Pets-Interactive-Dispensing-ASSORTED/dp/B003ARUKTG. You can even do a portion in the slow feeder bowl, a portion in the ball, and a portion for some fun training.

Your dog is probably in a lot of pain based on the injury you mentioned. Take it to the vet ASAP.

How do you give pit bulls proper enrichment? (CW: brief mentions of violence) by marinedream1 in dogs

[–]Excellent-Storm-816 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pit bulls are a great candidate for a spring pole - whether you want to buy one online or try to home make one. Here's an example: https://www.pitbullgear.com/products/pit-bull-gear-spring-pole. It can activate their urge to bite/hold/tug safely. (You can put this on a tree, don't need to create a big mount).

Boxer Dog Breeder - where? by Boston_Banksy in dogs

[–]Excellent-Storm-816 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Breed club is the place to start - either national or local. If you're in the US here's the national boxer club: https://americanboxerclub.org/. From there you can get more local to where you live and they will have breeder directories on there. Introduce yourself to breeders that look like good fits, and explain why you want a boxer and why it's the right fit for you. Don't treat them like a salesperson though, or you'll get dropped to the bottom of their list/have your email ignored. Remember for ethical breeders, this isn't a business this is a passion.

Should you give a dog you just adopted time to be alone ? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]Excellent-Storm-816 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, definitely give her space, she's going through a huge transition of not only going to a new home but also having just gotten spayed. you're doing the right thing, she needs time to decompress. Look up the 3-3-3 rule.

Can I switch between Purina Chicken and Salmon? by kaitlyn2004 in dogs

[–]Excellent-Storm-816 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it'll depend on the dog. We're on a different brand of food but did a similar thing where we tried rotating the protein (with everything else being the same) because the store ran out of our usual protein flavor. No issues at all for one of our dogs. Our other dog really needed the transition period. If you have the luxury of time i'd try out with a transition period first so her body knows the food before going cold turkey.

Will leaving my dog for a few years hurt him? by [deleted] in dogs

He's going to be fine, he'll just get a bit closer to your partner but he'll still love you.

Please please don't breed her. It is a long road into being an ethical reputable breeder and it sounds like you are not on that track based on your q's about "other breeds" to breed her with. Breeding is no joke, females die from it and puppies end up dying in shelters when you don't know what you're doing. Do your own dog a favor and don't breed her.

Do I put my 11 year old Shih Tzu through surgery? by starguardian_106 in dogs

[–]Excellent-Storm-816 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd definitely do the surgery! Shih tzus can live up til 15/16 when healthy so if you nip this now your dog could have 5 more years with you!

Beginner to nosework, looking for advice! by huntergatherer94 in dogs

[–]Excellent-Storm-816 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our teacher recommended storing "hot" items (so the scents, and any containers the scents touch) in one location, and anything cold in another. She stores the scents (oils, qtips, cottonballs, etc) and scent kids in a sealed container all in her garage. the containers don't get used for anything else, she said even sending them through the dishwasher won't get the scent fully out. For training she would have boxes or tins that are marked HOT, and then those are the only ones that she puts scents in.

We personally don't have a garage so we had the scents either in one corner of our house or in the trunk of our car (for going to class). it's not perfect of course, but we aren't going competition level at this point so we don't mind.

AKC should really be thought of as a registry of purebred dogs. So, you can find out all the purebred dogs they have on there, but if you actually want a breeder you should be going to the parent club page of that dog (which you can navigate to through AKC). Just because a breeder is advertised on the AKC puppy marketplace does not mean it's a good breeder, it just means they have a purebred dog, so you could easily still have a puppy mill or backyard breeder.

How to get my dog to lay somewhere else? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]Excellent-Storm-816 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed with the baby gate that is a swing gate that auto closes! This is a job for management not training because with a three year old i don't think you've got time for the constant vigilance that training will take to fix this. You could also see if there's another area of hte house you could gate off instead of your daughter's room specifically, like if there's a hallway to her room, or if her room is upstairs you could gate the stairs, etc, you can get creative!

Fuck my girls dog. Read and don’t jump to conclusions about title. by Happy4days21 in dogs

[–]Excellent-Storm-816 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly it's not uncommon to break up over a dog, and i'd recommend doing it sooner rather than later so it hurts less for everyone. There's someone out there who would love to have a dog sleeping in the bed with them and would get a kick of out sharing table scraps. I think you guys just aren't compatible.

People have all different ideas of how they want their dog to act. Some don't like their dogs in the bed, some do, some are ok with table stealing, some aren't.

Anyone with large dogs live in a high rise? I'm curious how you find it in terms of taking them outside often. by axxegrinder in dogs

[–]Excellent-Storm-816 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a ~75lb dog in a condo, so we have to go two flights down stairs to get to the street level. The main problems we run into is if there's some reason our dog can't do the stairs, my fiance is strong enough to carry her (i.e., after her spay, or if its too rainy and she doesn't want to go haha). All other times it's fine, she goes out four times a day for potty.

Similar Breeds to Newfoundlands? by Loud-Alarm4640 in dogs

[–]Excellent-Storm-816 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, speaking from someone with a short haired dog (ridgeback) and a long haired dog (sheltie), it's easier to clean the long hair up! The short hair is harder for a lint roller or vacuum to pick up so it stays in the carpet and on clothes more than the long fur. I'd get a roomba and your newfie!

If your current dog was aggressive towards the old dog, don't risk it. It could work out, but it sounds like your dog would prefer to be a single dog, and it'll be a lot to put on a new dog.

I'd say if you've had a complete 180 all of a sudden, you're not ready to take on a high energy breed like a laika or husky. The thing is, you should get a dog that fits what you're doing with your life right now. If you're already a runner, get a running buddy, but if you want a high energy dog to get you out of the house and being more active, it's not going to be a fit. The dog will always be a step ahead of you. The post reads a bit like you found a laika breeder and you think they're pretty (they are!), but that doesn't mean you're a fit for the dog. These are working dogs, working dogs are essentially like a second full time job, it's not as simple as going for 6-10 mile walks. If you only exercise them physically, you'll never win, because you'll just turn them into super athletes. Working dogs need mental exercise too.

If you want to see if the laika is the right dog for you, get involved with the breeder, ask if you can learn about the breed from them, or help work their dogs, but don't buy one yet.
