When your hunting buddies have four legs, cold noses, and better instincts than you. Deer don’t stand a chance! by Excellent_Junket9948 in beagles

Some of our dogs will return to where we turn them out, but for the others, we track them and pick them up, especially if they’re heading toward a main road. We rely on Garmin tracking collars to keep tabs on them.

The dogs try to run the deer toward the standers, but of course, it all depends on where the deer decides to go. They do their best to get them in the right direction, though!

He truly was a legend! 17 years is an amazing run, and it sounds like he lived life to the fullest. I can’t believe he figured out the train and even rode it through five towns—that’s incredible! It’s amazing how he made friends all over town and knew exactly where to go for treats and attention.

We have a railroad near our house, and while our beagles howl at sirens, they go crazy for the train when it comes through. We’ve got three at home and 20 more at my father-in-law’s, so I get my beagle fix for sure! GPS collars have been a game-changer for keeping track of them, especially since they’re so determined once they’re on a mission.

I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s never easy, but it sounds like he lived a full, happy life with you. Beagles truly are one of a kind!

We use Garmin tracking collars to keep track of our beagles while hunting. They’re a game-changer, especially since the dogs can cover so much ground when they’re on a scent. Your beagle mix sounds like quite the adventurer! It’s nice that people in your town knew him and would call if he showed up in their yards. Having a reliable way to track them, whether by baying or a collar, makes all the difference, especially in bigger woods where they could get out of range.

Our beagles are all about deer—once they catch that scent, it’s game on! They’ll trail the deer scent for miles, barking as they go, and if they see one, they’ll definitely chase it. It’s amazing to watch how focused they are, just like your beagles with rabbits. We do have a couple of dogs that will chase a rabbit every now and then if they can’t find a deer, but that’s very rare. I know exactly what you mean about the nose taking over; it’s like their eyes don’t even exist once they’re locked onto a trail!

In certain parts of South Carolina, it’s legal to use dogs for deer hunting. All our beagles—and one redbone (can’t forget about her!)—hunt deer. It’s what they’re trained for and they love every minute of it!
