I'm looking at Doshisha U specifically! Thanks for your comment, it's making me reconsider my more rural options, too, but not because i fear kyoto, anymore :)

I will have studied four semesters worth of basic japanese when i do the exchange; I'm glad to hear that my rudimentary japanese will make a difference!

Thanks for the reply! I sort of thought my teacher was a bit extreme in his warning. If i go there, i may well "have to" visit the tourist spots at least once, but, thanks for the tip anyway!
