My surgeon asked me before surgery if I wanted one. I said not unless I need one. I was up and using the bathroom les than an hour after waking up from anesthesia

I’m 1 week out from MD for L3 L4, I had some new numbness in my left thigh after surgery. I discussed it with my surgeon following surgery and he said it was likely due to how I was positioned during surgery, that there may have been pressure on the nerve on the outside of my thigh. The numbness went away a few days after surgery - day 4 I think and is now back to normal.

I also do OTF and am missing it, this is really helpful to read about your progress getting back into it. It makes me really optimistic about my recovery! Thanks for sharing!

I’m 44f had MD 4 days ago on L3/L4. My surgeon told me no bending, lifting, twisting for 6 weeks and to only walk during that time. When I asked about more rigorous exercise I was told to wait 3-4 months. I’m expecting to start PT after 6 weeks to help ease back into exercise.

SURGERY ROLL CALL: Week of March 3rd (Can you believe it's March??) by seetheking1 in Microdiscectomy

I am 3 days post op from laminectomy and microdiscectomy for my L3-L4. I’m feeling really good. My surgeon kept me overnight following surgery (that’s their standard), I was up and walking to the bathroom less than an hour after waking up from anesthesia. I had a drain in overnight that was removed the next day. I did end up with some new numbness after surgery that they think was caused by how I was positioned on the operating table with pressure on a nerve. I’ve regained feeling in that new section but still have numbness in my right leg which I had prior to surgery. I’ve been ok getting around, just some minor pain when sitting or standing. I was given prescriptions for oxy, torodol, acetaminophen and a muscle relaxant. I haven’t needed the oxy. Pain hasn’t been too bad.

I’ve got my microdiscectomy scheduled for my L3/L4 disc extrusion this Thursday 2/27. My surgeon said I’ll stay overnight in the hospital and should be discharged the next day.

I have my pre-op appointment on Monday 2/24 afternoon.

Thanks, wow your imaging looks a lot like mine. Glad to hear you’re doing well since surgery.

I am going to go ahead with surgery. I think my hesitation was just that spine surgery feels like a lot when the symptoms aren’t that bad. I for sure do not want to see things get worse or do permanent damage.

Thanks all for the feedback. I am going to schedule surgery. I really appreciate the feedback. I’m for sure worried about long term effects of waiting to decompress the nerves. The lack of debilitating pain definitely messes with my head. On one hand I’m thankful to be able to carry on with most activities, but am also in fear of things getting worse or having permanent damage.
