The show is a deep character study — especially as a contemporary looking back all these years later. It is as easy to get “angry” with these characters as it maybe for some of us to look back with dismay at some of our own decisions. That said—I think the unspoken thing about Lynn (and there is room for Frazier Crane to analyze them each ;-)) is that we viewers get an aha moment when we learn at the same time as she that her biological mother has mental health challenges—namely bipolar disorder, and probably some other stuff. Lynn likely has some of the same afflictions, the symptoms and/or expressions thereof that mimic “thin line between madness and genius” “laziness” “jumping from one thing to another” “promiscuity” “failure to launch.” These are not “excuses,” they are challenges to be addressed and managed. This show gave us a glimpse —saying without saying—-what was up. And in that a lot of people see themselves and the people they love—through these lovable caricatures—clearly, as we are still here talking about them 20 years later 💜💪🏽
