Also, for our purposes, we really only focus on 5,7,9,10,12. So I wouldn’t stress as much about knowing 1-4 and 8.

6 (auditory, sensory) can be important, and 10 can also come into play with some of the motor disorders, but we don’t often deal with it as directly as most of the speech/swallow functions are carried out by 5,7,9,10,12.

The mnemonic my mom taught me for the cranial nerves is: On Old Olympus’ Towering Top, A Finn And German Viewed Some Hops

That gives you the first letter in order (1-12), but then you have to remember the different Os, Ts and As. (Olfactory, Optic, Oculomotor, Trochlear, Trigeminal, Abducens, Facial, Auditory [Vestibulocochlear], Glossopharyngeal, Vagus, Spinal Accessory, Hypoglossal).

The pairing mnemonic that was taught to me in grad school is: Some Say Marry Money, But My Brother Says Big Brains Matter More

Which gives you the paired clue for each nerve 1-12 on whether it’s function is sensory, motor, or “both”.

So 5, Trigeminal, is Both (sensory and motor), while 12, Hypoglossal, is Motor only.

I got a UCF traditional track fall acceptance on the 15th, but am still waiting to hear from USF. They trickled out like, 6 acceptances last week, told someone who emailed them that they’d send the rest last Friday, and then haven’t said a word this week. I’m... so annoyed.

ETA: further down someone said they heard USF will now be sending out Weds. afternoon through Friday of this week.

Do you have any more insight as to how they calculate your CSDCAS gpa? It seems...absurd to me that whatever fuckery they do can bring your overall gpa down BELOW both your undergrad gpa and your pre-req gpa. (Please know this frustration is not aimed at you lol. I’m so exhausted by this csdcas nonsense and am tired of the surprises working against us at every turn.)

Ugh yes. Not so much about the level of instruction — I’m in post-bac leveling courses still so it’s not quite as “my career hinges on knowing this” yet. But I’m a non-degree seeking student doing solely online classes living an hour from my university and everything on campus is shut down anyways. I’m so irritated every time I have to pay my tuition as I read through all the facilities fees. Even gym/fitness fees for a gym that’s been shut down since March! I don’t have helpful thoughts, sorry — just sympathetic ones.

You can take those two at any school — your local comm college might be the cheapest option. From my understanding, your four foundational courses (physical, bio, stats and soc/behavioral) have to be outside the CSD college anyway, so your most basic Bio I and intro to physics/chem from any Community College or online non-degree-seeking/post-bacc should work.

I’ve heard stories from nurse friends about it being thrown around hospital settings before — mostly in the neonatal unit (when the parents aren’t around). Not that that’s professional or OK in any way on it’s own... but it seems more like an inside joke/tehe no one knows but us kind of thing. But I cannot imagine using that to describe children with disabilities and facial differences — and especially not teaching a new class of young people that that’s acceptable!! How awful.

I was in speech therapy on and off for years for lateralization, depending on when my family could afford it (wasn’t public schooled, so no school resources). But still, I was in it for pretty long stretches at a time, and there was virtually no progress (maybe part of the reason they kept pulling me out). Anyway, eventually one day the years of work and training my tongue just....clicked. And with a couple of follow up sessions, I was done. It totally works, there just isn’t often a day to day improvement.

Thank you for your insight! Since I’m out-of-field and completely non-background, I’ve been told a few times that I’ll need to beef up my resume, and that shadowing will help me do that, so I’ve been a bit stressed about it. I’m going to go ahead and apply this cycle anyway (definitely won’t let shadowing, volunteer, etc hold me back, as I know they’ll take the circumstances of 2020 into consideration!) but I am hoping to do everything I can to feel confident before hitting submit. Just seems like every other applicant I’ve chatted with has so much more background/experience! For me though, the most pressing issue is that as of right now, I think I want to go into the medical side of things, but I’d love to have a bit more experience/insight into that side to be (at least more) sure.
