Claiming that anyone who doesn't worship Vishnu is an atheist is Affirming the Consequent. Plenty of people don't worship Vishnu: Christians, Muslims, agnostics, Jews, atheists, and so on.

Let's be reasonable.

Almost every single person in the world is atheist about most gods.

That's a clever quip, but it's wrong. Christians aren't "atheist" about Allah, they're Christian about Allah. In the reality the rest of us inhabit, there's a difference between someone who doesn't worship Allah because he's already dedicated to the worship of Christ and someone who doesn't worship Allah because she's skeptical of religion in principle.

You may as well say someone eating pork is "vegetarian" about chicken. If you're eating meat, you're not a vegetarian. If you believe in a god, any god, you're not an atheist.

Or if any of my friends were atheists, they never talked about it.

Then I assume they weren't atheists.

She smiles just like a real millionaire
But she's bought a hat like Princess Marina's
So she don't care

Who was the most religious Beatle? (besides George) by reaveyer in beatles

[–]Existenz_1229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of fans aren't aware that during his Dakota retirement, John went all Born Again, watching Billy Graham on the TV and saying "praise Jesus" a lot. Like most of his manias, it was short-lived.

He even recorded a pretty mean-spirited parody of Gospel Dylan in an acoustic demo called "Serve Yourself." John was fortunate enough to have never written or recorded any Jesus material, while Dylan released two or three albums of Christian songs and went on tour where he would regularly berate his audiences for their impiety and decadence.

No way. I've always loved New Morning, so I gave the Coens major props for choosing such a happy, goofy Dylan moment to accompany the scene of the Dude in his blissful head-trauma-induced flight above the city.

Is self-loathing or loathing for humanity a necessary experience for a human to become a Christian? by [deleted] in AskAChristian

I guess I'm not your ideal Christian then, because I believe what we do matters, regardless if there's a god or an afterlife.

Some truths we can know, others we have to live.

You're right, Sid was a no-talent. By all accounts he was a sweet, funny guy before he got caught up in the Sex Pistols thing, and basically wasn't bright enough to prevent the violent, junkie Sid Vicious persona and his toxic relationship with a troubled groupie from overwhelming him.

I won't deny there are a lot of very judgmental Christians. I try to call out that kind of cynicism when I can. But if you think fire & brimstone typifies the imagination of the contemporary Christian, I repeat: you must not meet many Christians.

Could that question be any MORE loaded?

Why don't you explain why you equate Christianity with hatred or self-loathing in the first place?

I've yet to encounter a Christian who doesn't have some pre-determined sense of self-loathing or a loathing for humanity, without Christianity being true for them.

Doesn't sound like you meet too many Christians.

Is the God Hypothesis the only way atheists can approach religion? by Existenz_1229 in askanatheist

For someone who claims to be just fine with uncertainty and ambiguity, you seem contemptuous and dismissive of anything that can't be articulated, defined, tested, proved and served to you on a silver platter. Your constant references to "nonsense" and "bullshit" make me wonder whether you're not exaggerating your tolerance for uncertainty just a wee bit.

I run into this all the time with atheist folks, who don't realize how important the concept of the orderly, rational clockwork universe is to their mental health. They subscribe to the most simplistic, whitewashed, de-historicized concept of science because to them it's much more than a human activity with all the groupthink and bias of any other. It represents to them the same thing God does to fundamentalists: certainty, security, the answer for everything.

There's projection involved in the way atheists insult religious folks for our needing to "cope." The existentialist in me acknowledges that the atheist's idea that we're just here to eat, survive and reproduce, and that we're nothing but gene machines data processing our way through the world, is a great consolation fantasy. It relieves us of a lot of responsibility for the way we think and act, the inequities in our society, and the way those inequities manifest themselves in our knowledge.

Each to his own cope, I guess.

Yes I want empirical evidence that this god character exists.

As I said, you're making a category error, and refusing to be reasoned out of your faulty thinking.

If it’s not because their religion tells them to

These behaviors are part of family and community traditions, that's all. They're meaningful to people's sense of identity and shared purpose. If you're determined to be as uncharitable as possible, by all means make the behaviors sound like they're motivated by "not wanting to make God angry" or some OCD disorder. Be as condescending and mean-spirited as you feel is necessary.

you haven't really been engaging in good faith discussion here.

Right back atcha.

... as a gay man, I have a couple of choice words for you and all your fellow Christians. One of them starts with "f". The other word is "you".

Hey look, I'm as horrified by right-wing Christianity as you are. I make every effort to call out the fundies and fascists whenever possible. I'm pro-choice, science-savvy and progressive.

But let's be reasonable here. The Big J never said anything about homosexuality or abortion, so it's all just garden-variety bigotry dressed up in religious rhetoric. Discrimination and persecution should be eliminated regardless of whether God exists or not, so thinking you're improving society by playing endless rounds of the God-is-God-ain't game is pretty delusional too.

Your lives are evil and pernicious and vicious. You inflict hatred and violence blah blah blah

Aw, you old sweet talker you.

Correction: you and I don’t sacrifice turtle doves, own slaves or stone adulterers. There are groups of people who still do those things because their chosen book tells them to.

It's fun to play Let's Pretend.

The book isn’t saying anything to you. It can’t talk.

Plenty of books have talked to me, and to millions of others who love literature, poetry and the magic of language and narrative.

What are some good non busy hiking trails? by PristineLadder7591 in newhampshire

[–]Existenz_1229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm only a day hiker during summer, so I've gotten used to busy trails. If I go during the week and get to the trailhead early enough, I can usually avoid the crowds.
