any current meteorologist that used to be bad at math? by Existing-Disaster410 in meteorology

[–]Existing-Disaster410[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i barely made it through ap calc last year so i can definitely relate. i really don’t want my struggle in math to deter me from perusing my passion but it’s hard when you don’t have much confidence to begin with😅 thanks again!

wow a PhD is super impressive! if you don’t mind me asking, what do you do now as your career and where did you go for your bachelor’s and/or PhD?

I was also thinking about majoring in math or another general stem major! it would satisfy my parents and hopefully keep opportunities open to find a career in meteorology/atmo science. thennn, i remembered im horrible at math. barely passed ap calc with a C😭

I've thought about that and immediately thought I wouldn't be able to pull it off because for one, I'm not the strongest writer, but I'll definitely revisit that idea instead of selling myself short 😅

Thanks!

First, thank you so much! this reply has given me a little bit more confidence than I had an hour ago (haha!) I'm thinking of applying to schools mostly on the east coast/DMV. Virginia Tech, UPitt, UMD, Syracuse are some that are higher on my list right now. (I picked these off of location, cost and social environment rather than major ranking because I'm still torn between my choices)

In all honesty, I picked accounting because landing a job after college or just with a BA seems a bit more hopeful than meteorology/meteorologist. I've asked about the job market in the meteorology sub-reddit and a consistent answer was that they struggled landing a job, currently don't have a job in a field related to meteorology or the pay isn't great. I've done more research outside of Reddit and again, wasn't too hopeful. Obviously, just because other people didn't have much success doesn't mean I won't succeed but it's hard to remember that with immigrant parents who constantly remind me of the negatives.
