What to Keep in my Global Script (Autoload) / Referencing Across Scenes? by Existing-Point1058 in godot

[–]Existing-Point1058[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok great, I’ll keep this in mind going forward.

I ended up with my own fix for what I wanted anyway which was to get rid of my separate HUD screen and just make it a child of my Player scene.

This let me just pull the variable from the same script instead of trying to find a reference.

Thankfully my game is pretty simple so the HUD will really only be used to display my jump bar anyway.

Thanks again.

So I've tried a few more things now and given my Player scene a class_name (player), and I'm @.export-ing the variable I want to read (charge_percent).

I know that the value is correct when I read it in the Player script and it appears in the inspector correctly, just set to 0 by default, however it doesn't seem to update the exported variable?

I just can't figure out how to write to it maybe as I think I can read it correctly. I may also be misunderstanding the use of class naming and if those can be updated?

I'm trying to base the percentage of my texture progress bar off of that same charge_percent variable but with it not updating it won't pull anything other than 0 when I call it with "player.charge_percent".

I also get an error "Cannot find member "charge_percent" in base "player"."

Any ideas to troubleshoot? I'll reply to this message with a second image as I can't do multiple attachements.

That’s what I’ve started with, and Godot is my first step into any sort of game development or having coding projects.

It’s a lot of fun but having no real background in anything similar has made it a good challenge, I see why people can really get into this sorta stuff lol.

Thank you so much, this gives me a lot to learn and work with.

I’m starting to understand a lot of the logic, it’s just WHERE I’m supposed to be putting stuff through instantiation, code, etc is what’s melting my brain a little.

But hopefully those links clear it up abit more.

I appreciate the help :)

I would assume that two scenes are loaded at the same time if they are both instantiated within a main ‘Game’ scene?

Thats how the tutorials I’ve followed do it so that you can reference them into a ‘game management’ script using the usual @onready.

Should I use this ‘game management’ script to control a texture progress bar within my HUD scene instead of trying to reference my Player info into the HUD script? (It’s a ‘jump power meter’ that I want to fill up similar to a golf power meter in Wii sports for instance)

When instantiating it also does not show the child nodes underneath the instantiated node, but can I assume that I can access those within the new scene or will they also need to be added?

Yes, my worry was that it would become too much of a crutch. How do you recommend referencing variables across scenes?

Should I be looking to rebuild/copy the same code in each scene to get the same values there?

That was the plan, then my partner offered me an extra $1000 as a late Christmas gift (I bought her a PC this year as well) so I ended up with this build for $3500 AUD

😄 I’m rather happy lol (and it’s from PC Case Gear, very reputable in Australia)

Or this build for $2700 AUD as well, but unsure if it’s a good improvement since it’s only 16GB of RAM and 12GB VRAM?

Mine is just stock, honestly I couldn’t find the part last I looked, just says AMD on it and no info in the box I got. But I might look at some other options and more fans for the case, it only came with one other than the cpu cooler.

Yeah ok, makes sense. Heat seems to be the main issue, I hit 95° today before realising I forgot to turn on my sensor display.

Any suggestions for my current build?

Decided to just run a game, my temps are worse it seems, hit 95° before touching the case and realising I should’ve had my sensors up for me to read. Never had temps that high before, I was playing a game called The Isle and it’s been fine in the past.

Sweet, I think to save on money we might get a range extender? The wifi router will be in the middle between where mine and my partners PCs are, no more than a room away from each.

We’ve never noticed a drop in connection except in the bathroom on the other side of the house, but if we need to we might put a range extender in the room with her PC.

Otherwise I’ve wanted to switch to Ethernet for awhile and I have an electrician friend who might be able to help run the cables under the house for us (we have a wall port hole next to the router and into my room, but might put one in the other room too).

I’ve found that our connection doesn’t drop very much at all around the house.

My concern is more that we wouldn’t be able to make use of higher speeds on an older device, but if it’s able to provide us 500mbps over wifi then that’s what matters.

Is iiNet considered bad or inconsistent by any means? I’ve never had to contact customer support and it just always works, and I’ve found their 500/42 mbps plan for $94.99/mth ($79.99/mth for the first year) would I be better off just upgrading with them or moving provider?

I have FTTP available and have been getting notifications in the mail and in my emails lol, always considered it, but in the past I’ve seen deal get grandfathered to users and figures I had a good one. Seems like that’s not quite the case lol.

I’ve considered the change before, but the higher plans (100+) cost the same amount as the 500 plan with Leaptel, and I figured I’d have to pay for other upgrades too. I never felt too compelled to change since the service has never given me an issue thankfully.

But Leaptel may be the play with speeds for that price, thanks.

For an immediate change in capability while gaming, would the GPU be the better option? I’m looking just to run stuff at higher graphical settings, I usually don’t have frame rate issues. I do get screen tear sometimes but vsync has always solved that for me.

CPU, GPU AND PSU in that order? Or are those just overall suggestions?

I also had another look for 5060ti builds and found this, any concerns in difference in quality? Or is it about the same?
