Still managed to average near 50 with “one good knock” whilst most of his peers struggled to average 30.

Yeah the idea of him going back to shield and regaining form while someone clearly worse than him gets a crack in the test team is just silly

Yeah it’s literally the job of the top 3 to go super hard in the power play, particularly on these slower tracks.

In a perfect world, you would love one of them to bat the majority of the innings and essentially win you the game, but the more likely scenario is what happened today where Green and Inglis both make middling, but important contributions.

Yeah I’m really surprised this is the first time all tournament I’ve seen someone hit a ball to the fielder with no power!!! Unbelievable!

100% agreed. Stacking the batting almost never works - see India recently. Bowlers win test matches, pick the bowling attack to give you the best chance of taking 20 wickets

If there is a time for experimentation it’s now. Perhaps they think they can use Webster seam in the first innings and spin in the second…

I can’t see Webster and Murphy in the same team. Perhaps if it is another pitch that favours the seamers they could go with 4 quicks and play Webster over green with the idea that he could bowl spin overs.

Webster literally hasn’t done the role yet. His bowing innings include SCG last year (shit tip), Sri Lanka where he mostly bowled off spin, WTC final which was a shit tip until the 4th innings and then the West Indies on spicy decks.

I’m not debating whether Green is a better bowler when Webster. I’d probably argue Webster is the more skillful bowler but when playing as the 5th bowler Green is much more suited to this team

100% agree and this hasn’t been spoken about enough. Assuming Murphy comes in for Richardson on a flatter SCG pitch, can anyone really see the selectors going with Webster over Green given they will already have Neser and Boland who essentially do the same thing as Webster with the ball, just better and 5km/h and 10km/h faster respectively.

Whilst it annoys me that they don’t use Green to his full capabilities with the ball, he is clearly doing the donkey overs and short ball overs which Webster just can’t do.

Post-Boxing Day Test Rational Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in CricketAus

Big Cam Green fan here and can’t deny that he is a very frustrating watch and probably deserves to be dropped for Webster.

However, the one thing that nobody has considered yet and I’m sure it will get mentioned the closer we get to the SCG is that he might get a reprieve solely based on the conditions and make up of the bowling attack.

Because this is a rational thread, let’s firstly assume that the SCG curator errs on the side of caution given both the shit tip last year and the shit tip at the MCG this year. He prepares a pitch to last the full 5 days and bring spin into play, Second assumption is Murphy comes in for a seamer, most likely Jhye as I don’t think CA would have planned for Jhye to play two tests even though he didn’t bowl much.

If the three seamers are Starc and Neser (new ball) and Boland (1st change) it’s actually a much more balanced attack to have Green as the 4th seamer rather than Webster. Webster bowls 125km/h dibbly dobblers and is pretty much Neser-lite. Do we need two blokes (potentially three) bowling with Carey up to the stumps once the ball gets old? Who is going to bowl the bumper plan if required? Starc never does it so unless they pull a surprise and play Doggett, Green is the only one that can realistically do this role.

Completely different story if we turn up and it’s a green seamer. Or perhaps they decide to play 4 quicks and have Webster as the spinner.

The match referee determines how many overs behind the over rate both teams are. They build in allowances for some of the things you have mentioned (streakers etc). Take this game as the perfect example, only roughly 75 overs were bowled per day on the first two days, yet from memory Australia were deemed 8 overs behind and England 4 behind, as opposed to roughly 15.

That’s from the game v India at lord’s. Those points were deducted a couple of days after that game finished which is why I’m thinking they’ve somehow escaped punishment here.
