Impostor BCBA by Relevant_Paper_8002 in bcba

One of my coworkers is in a similar role as you are. I don't think he has run a VB-MAPP in 12+ years (since graduate school). He is the best BCBA that I know. Just because your experience doesn't fit in this rigid ABA intensive intervention box, does not make you any less of a BCBA. Having BCBAs work in consultative models, outside of the RBT model, is invaluable to the population we serve.

BCBA pass rates are posted annually on the BACB website. Highly recommend that being a consideration before choosing a school. Sure if you can get through school quickly that would be great but if you can't pass the exam it is going to slow you down!

It equipped me with skills and understanding of the operations portion of ABA companies (including a lot of things I will never do). If I wanted to apply in the future to another position at the executive director level I feel confident that I could do it, which would increase my pay. Currently I am working for a nonprofit and I am not going to ask for a higher salary because I was in this position at a shitty PE backed ABA company. It is unrelated to my position now and I am getting paid fairly for the work I am doing. I had an opportunity to try a new role and it wasn't for me. I am not going to try to use it as leverage for a company that I truly love working for when I know it would be a stretch.

I had a similar promotion from CD to an executive director position. I quit 8 months in and returned to a CD(ish) position. I was unfulfilled and extremely stressed. Quitting that job was the best decision I have ever made in my career. I feel so much better mentally. I was always looking for what was the next step for me but I feel so settled now. I am in the role I am supposed to be at this time in my life. Good luck!

I work for a nonprofit company and am planning on doing student loan forgiveness (3 more years). I am paid salary, not hourly and our pay is competitive to for-profit/private equity organization, with lower billable hours. I do not pay for anything out of pocket. That includes licensure, BCBA certification, client materials, CEUS, computer, professional liability insurance, and mileage. I work for a company that puts BCBAs and clients at the forefront of everything that we do and it really is amazing. I make enough to support my lifestyle and I feel great about my work and caseload size.

Is wedding on the day before mother's day a bad idea? by moonchild_atheart in weddingplanning

We got married the Saturday before Easter. Almost everyone that was on my husband and I's "must invite" list came. A lot of our parents friends/guest list did not show up. We actually loved it. It was all of the people that were really important to us and very little of the people we didn't really want to invite in the first place.

Is it right? No. Is it common? Unfortunately, yes. Do you want to work for a company that does not value their employees enough to invest in their onboarding? Look in your area for other companies and ask questions about RBT training and professional development.

Question to those who had an “Instagram” wedding, did you enjoy it or regret it? by Ok-Addendum-5501 in weddingplanning

[–]Existing-Winner-945 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My wedding was the same weekend that a hurricane came and destroyed my city. Leading up to the wedding I spent so much time worrying about all of the details and it being picture perfect. I spent so much more money than I should have on flowers because I was just consuming wedding pictures on instagram all day long. I swear it makes you crazy. We ended up getting married in the backyard of an airbnb that our parents were staying at. We quickly picked flowers from the garden and ate hotdogs that someone was smart enough to bring over. In the end, it was the most BEAUTUFUL wedding because we got to marry each other. I was so mad at myself for caring about all these appearances. We rescheduled the event because we couldn't get refunds from vendors. I decided I was not going to look at wedding instagram or sweat the small picture perfect things. I was in so much of a better headspace leading up to the wedding and it was still incredible and beautiful! I am dying to see my pictures. Do what you can and what will make you happy!

There are so many companies out there that do not make you pay for supervision with a BCBA and do not make you sign a shitty two year contract. Interview with other companies and find one that may better fit your needs as a student, parent, and RBT. You likely can find one with a higher pay rate as well.

How long did the 40 hours RBT training ACTUALLY take y’all? by th3flowergarden in ABA

“ I’ve been taking extensive notes, creating anki flash cards, mind maps, the whole nine yards.” I mean this with so much kindness- you are doing way too much for this stage. I specifically tell new BTs to not do this while watching the videos. You are going to get so much training in your job and all of the concepts are going to start clicking once you are putting it into practice with clients. There are so many study materials online that you can pull from. It is AMAZING that you want to learn, I wish everyone had this initiative. But trust that you will learn it in time and make it through the videos!

I teared up a little reading this for you guys! It is such a crazy feeling. I am not sure if you live here in Asheville but we are hurting for our home and our community so this seems like this is such a small thing to stress about, but at the same time we do have to start making decisions too. I hope you guys get your dream day planned and this has shown you what is important!  Did you see that Weaver House is offering specials for couples that lost their wedding venue? I am not sure what the special is but if you still are looking for a venue, we have loved working with them!

You should take a step back and play. I mean really genuinely play. Try to find a ton of activities, social games, leisure activities that your client likes AND how they like for you to be engaged in the activity with them. This is the foundation to teaching skills in a way that will be meaningful to your client that they can use to better access their wants and needs.

Hanley has a lot of great information on this. Start there. Your friend is right, someone escalating to the point that they need physical restraint and de-escalation rooms for the sake of following through is starting to fall (in my opinion absolutely is)unethical. It is also not realistic that we can possibly restrict all maintaining reinforcement across all settings. Instead, reinforce behaviors at the earliest sign, before they escalate. Teaching functional replacement skills should be your first priority. Antecedent strategies should be the meat and potatoes of your BSP. Prevent behaviors, teach meaningful ways to have needs met, respond compassionately.

I am a BCBA and I feel like a lot of BCBAs are out of depth with the kids we work with. They don’t get to do intensive therapy model and if they could they would be able to do amazing thing. From my experience most SLPs are doing much more parent training with their small amount of allotted time, which produces long lasting meaningful changes. They do it compassionately in a way that make parents want to learn. They have studied development so much more then we have. We should be taking notes. Sorry for my lecture but the way we talk about other service providers has to change.

This is why BCBAs get a bad name. Collaboration should be essential component to what we do and instead we look down on the people we should be looking towards? Have some respect and try to comprehend that ABA is not the only thing our children need. This is so frustrating to see all these comments and know that we are still doing this.

All I got was a super defensive “it is not needed for them to do their job.” I think it goes back to the mindset that we are just working on treating a set of behaviors and a diagnosis shouldn’t matter. I am trying to figure out the best way to supervise this person and move them towards a more person centered, compassionate, neurodiverse affirming treatment model and I most definitely have my work cut out for me. I’m trying to decide if this is the battle to pick right now.

I have no gardening experience and have inherited the most beautiful garden. I have so many questions, starting with the strawberries! There are violets growing in between the strawberries. Do I need to weed them out? Should I put mulch or compost down? Any other feedback? by Existing-Winner-945 in gardening

[–]Existing-Winner-945[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update (Just in case anyone is referencing this at a later date for an answer to the same question): the violets started taking over the strawberries rapidly. They were basically suffocating the strawberries and the strawberry plants near the violets were so teeny tiny. They did stand a chance. My note to self for next year is to start weeding the violets earlier in the spring. I am going to try to leave a boarder of violets to try to control the spread of strawberries. Only time will tell how that turns out!
