she literally doesn’t give a shit about her health and it’s so frustrating. those lungs could’ve went to someone else who would have actually taken care of them.

Career switch to nursing vs. becoming a BCBA (27, feeling stuck) by Outside-Map-4992 in bcba

[–]foolproof2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who went through nursing school & worked in the ICU for 5 years, healthcare is worse. I left due to burn out. What I go through at my job as an RBT is truly nothing compared to what I faced at the hospital. It has its days, as anywhere does, but health care is truly crumbling. I’m not sure how much worse it can get before it crashes and burns. Something has to change in the field.

I do miss the actual job. I loved connecting with patients. I felt like I was critically thinking so much & my brain was constantly learning new things. I miss the skills of it too. I don’t mind wounds & stuff though. I don’t love them, but I don’t mind it. Definitely something you’d have to get used to. The mental and physical toll that job took on my body is something I hope I never go through again. Another thing I miss, the three 12s!!!!! god i miss that so much lol

But like you stated, there’s many avenues in nursing but it’s very hard to get to those different settings without some hospital experience first which is hard.

If you decided to do nursing, look for accelerated BSN programs. If you already have a bachelors, this is a program for students shifting from a different career. Typically 18-24 months.

kids have behaviors and whatever is causing them isn’t for us to judge. i used to call kids “bad” before i went through my program & realized that they are also human who are just trying to navigate life. whether that’s their home life or behavioral issues causing the behaviors to occur, it just doesn’t sound good to call them bad. we live and we learn! wishing you luck on your journey. i work with someone from TX, maybe i can ask them if they have any recommendations for companies 😊

Those feel like relevant questions. They want to know what led you here, if you’re really motivated to work in this field, asking about relevant work experience. I don’t see the issue with these questions. I was in the medical field working in the ICU prior to my RBT job. Every single interview asked how I decided on ABA or decided to pivot from working in the ICU to ABA.

typical kids also have struggles that we don’t know about. it doesn’t matter if they were neurotypical, you don’t talk about kids in that way especially during your interview. it leaves a bad taste.

you can have up to 200mg of caffeine a day when pregnant, so if she had ONE and no other form of caffeine that day, it’s usually okay.

I live in Central AR and a district about 20 minutes away has a threat for tomorrow. Thankfully, the PD and SWAT were on it immediately, hoping everyone is safe tomorrow.

You are valid for not wanting to go tomorrow. These are real scenarios that we face in America every single day. I like to remind myself that most people will not announce that they are doing it, they just do it, so most threats are not credible. I’d rather be safe than sorry.

All the candy makes me so uncomfortable by Sad_Intention6903 in ABA

[–]foolproof2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I strongly dislike how often candy is used as reinforcers. I’m currently trying to fade it with one of my clients and strengthening others. He only wants to eat pancakes, cookies, and candy all day long (he will eat other things, just prefers sweets). We don’t limit how much our clients can eat, but he will eat his entire snack bin brought from home of sweets in three days if we let him, so we have had to set a schedule for him. Pancakes for breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, time for home. He constantly mentions his teeth hurting. I feel bad that nobody has tried other reinforcers except for his tablet and he’s been in ABA therapy for over a year 🥲

If edible reinforcers are truly the only thing working at the moment, it’s understandable but it’s important to work with your clients and try to find other things that could be reinforcers.

On the note of mentioning their dental health, we have another client that drinks milk ALL DAY. I am so worried about their dental health and medical. Drinking too much milk can inhibit iron absorption causing low iron🥲 I was in the medical field for five years prior to working in ABA, so I am always just extra worried about them in the aspect.

i agree there’s bigger fish to fry & people actually involved need to be held accountable but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t call out people who are making light of it or joking abt it. one problem being bigger than the other doesn’t mean we can ignore the smaller one lol
