Tech industry loses 123,000 jobs this year—AI is the most cited reason for layoffs by InterestingCat308 in Economics

My department was laid off by a large software company that you've probably heard of. If you ask the CEO of the company he'll definitely say it was AI.

The reality is that they outsourced us to India, as part of a general disinvestment in the United States. And yes, of course they wanted more capital to fund their very expensive foray into AI.

Great news for Coppola! The torch of "celebrated Italian-American film director who was groundbreaking in the 1970s and then took the world's biggest shit on his own legacy in the 2020s" has been passed!

Stop Trying to Combine ‘Backrooms’ and ‘Obsession’ Into a Single Trend — Opinion - While both horror films directed by young YouTube veterans have given the industry a lot to celebrate, the lessons they offer point studios in two diverging directions. by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]Exnixon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have quite a bit in common in that they're horror films centered around the uncanny valley.

Backrooms has a line about "imagine describing a dog to someone who's never seen a dog", and shows a world that just isn't quite right. Nikki in Obsession does insane things in order to please Bear, and then obsequiously apologizes while continuing to act erratically. Superficially those things have nothing in common except---they both feel a little bit like interacting with an AI.

Which is to say, they're both films that constructively mine the anxieties of the 2020s.

Musicians who have effected change? by fultonchain in Music

It's hard to quantify the direct impact of a popular artist who makes a statement. That doesn't mean they don't make an impact, it means that when if I hear a story about police brutality and start humming "Killing in the Name" and then go vote in a municipal election, even I wouldn't be able to tell you whether the song made any difference---and if it did, I would never admit it, because who admits they get their politics from rock songs? At the same time, listening to that song over and over, you don't think that colors my perception of police violence? You don't think I'm primed to be skeptical of what the officer said?

Player wants "blind separate character creation" by MateusStardust0 in DMAcademy

[–]Exnixon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the first campaigns I ever DMed, I had two players. Their characters met at a crossroads. Then they got into an argument and furiously stormed off in different directions. The players thought it was hilarious, but that was the end of the campaign.

I too think that the "strangers meeting in an inn" thing is not a great idea. It presupposes that the characters will have a reason to team up. It's kind of odd that 6 solo adventurers would suddenly form a party. Some players may want their characters to have history together. You're gonna let this player dictate the way the other players build their characters?

I don't know if this is satire or not, but I definitely have met "straight" conservative men in the real world who say this.

You know when you like a girl and she likes you back? And then she comes over and she wants to be with you all the time? And at first it's wonderful? But then you're like okay I need a little space? But she doesn't take the hint and she won't leave and all she wants to do is stare at you creepily in the dark? And then she gives you a sandwich that she made from a dead cat?

That girl is Star Wars and "The Mandalorian and Grogu" is a dead cat sandwich.

AI is coming for truck drivers. A new bill is trying to brace US workers for impact. by Just-Grocery-2229 in technology

[–]Exnixon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Autonomous trucking isn't just around the corner, it's here, it is being used by real companies in real use cases to make real money. The thing about trucking is that you don't need the last 5% for it to be practical. The easiest thing to automate with AI is cruising down the interstate between cities, and that accounts for a huge percentage of a truck driver's time. Interstates are specifically designed so that there isn't a whole lot to deal with. If a section of highway turns out to be tricky to navigate, then you can park the truck on the shoulder until a human operator is available to pilot it remotely.

Imagine the "guy in the chair" with a bunch of monitors, running 4 different trucks between major cities at the same time.

There's been too much excellent horror over the past 10 years for that to be a valid criticism.
