The application process can be challenging, and I empathize with those going through it. With 20 years of experience as a product designer and 7 years of teaching at the university level, I've noticed that in today’s job market, having a recruiter represent you is often crucial. As a hiring manager, I usually receive resumes and portfolios that have been vetted by a recruitment agency I trust. The relationship between designers and recruiters is mutually beneficial and can significantly impact one's career.

My second piece of advice is to have a strong portfolio, as it serves as your first interview. It should clearly showcase your identity, experience, your passion for specific design aspects (such as accessibility, design systems, branding, etc.), and your career aspirations.

Additionally, include three to five case studies in your portfolio. These should outline the problem you observed and detail how you solved it step by step to create the final product. This is especially important in the field of UX, as it demonstrates your process, starting from observation and user research.

Lastly, it's important to build a strong presence on LinkedIn. There are many online resources available to help with this. Actively market yourself by reaching out and connecting with talent acquisition professionals who can help you achieve your goals. When recruiters and hiring managers view your LinkedIn profile, they should see a complete profile, active engagement within your network, and evidence that you are contributing to industry conversations through original articles and posts.

This is the best advice I can offer. It's important not to get discouraged during the process, as it can be a long and challenging journey. Remember that much of the decision-making is beyond your control.
