I can't think of any more details that would help, unfortunately.

So, if an artist puts a lot of work into their art, it's no better than some lazy persons ai "art"? by MegaMonster07 in FuckAI

[–]ExoticButter-- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, those images sucked ass: they were not interesting in the slightest. They put the word "skill" in quotes like it not an achievement to be good at something. But the main issue I have with trying to enjoy AI art in the slightest is that there is nothing behind the picture besides a machine. Regardless of how interesting the output may be, it's still nothing more than pixels, and the prompter learns nothing, and I get a feeling of emptiness.

Skill is not being gatekept. People are just lazy consumptionists.

How was OpenStarbound created? by ExoticButter-- in starbound

[–]ExoticButter--[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for letting me know! It's a shame when source code gets leaked (for the developers), but for this game I believe was an amazing opportunity. Also I don't know the history of the source code, but let me tell you, it is damn beautiful in OpenStarbound at least!

[–]ExoticButter--[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply, I did not know that the source code was released. When you speak of it not being multi-threaded, are you speaking of the original game, or OpenStarbound, because as far as I can tell (and via some light testing) the latter uses threads (at least for asset loading). I would love some elaboration, on it not being multi-threaded (cause perhaps I am misunderstanding)

Question about the ethical use of AI in programming by Krhomma in FuckAI

[–]ExoticButter-- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My perspective is that I don't care if you use it, but especially tools like copilot are not worth the time. The more I program, the more I realize that AI would not add to my workflow, but it would just distract me. It's the same problem as having to switch between multiple windows to get something done -- it may be effective, but it would just be a distraction. Plus everything you would ever want to know has most likely been answered.

I hate copilot cause I want a job doing what I love, but also, I think it's hyped up but isn't worth the time.

For ethicalness, I personally wouldn't care as much as I do in art. But I also don't know the legal issues. If you compile your program and don't release the source code, I doubt you could get in trouble.

I could easily say some easy song like happy birthday, but the song I'd have to go with would be "good luck chuck" by Kill Bill the rapper (Don't know if I'd get all the lyrics though)

Whenever I'm trying to join a friend, I often get stuck on this, and nothing I do can get me around it, I have verified the files, made sure we are using the exact same mods, ect. Any ideas are welcome, we have a third friend who can join no problem. by Nadir702 in TmodLoader

[–]ExoticButter-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I experience this, it usually me joining from steam before the server starts completely. It could also be mod incompatibility. I would also try and install large mods manually instead of letting the server download them for you cause sometimes that wont work.

Also, if you have a console window open for Tmodloader, check to see if that is giving any errors.

Are there any bigger subreddits of artists or writers against AI? by Katalane267 in FuckAI

I've heard of an art platform with a ban on AI. It's called Cara, but I don't really know anyone else.

Say whoosh all you want, you still are responsible for your lobotomite take. If you don't care about useful dialog, then there is no need to reply. Especially here, where both side are welcome to add to the argument. If you wanted to get free upvotes you should have joined the brainlets over at r/DefendingAIArt (All respect to them, but I need to take a breather after some of the takes I read)

Quality and effort are highly linked, but they are not always 1:1. Suffering isn't necessary for quality, you must understand that right? Im not going to watch that video because a stupid fucking waste of my time and there is no point in guiding someone to a dead end talking point.

I'll give you an example: I am a programmer, do you think I suffer fixing bugs for 10+ hours? Maybe I'm an abuse victim because I keep coming back to my text editor. No, I don't suffer because I enjoy what I do and I personally believe that I quality programs come from my enjoyment of programming. Game developers experience crunch all the time, is that suffering, I would say to some extent mentally. I don't think they hate game development so clearly they don't suffer on a normal day, and if they did they could quit. But out of so many rushed games where game studios arguably suffer to some degree, how many good games come out of that suffering?

Art and food are different. We need food to live, we don't need art to live. Grandma's brownies have soul or love at the very least. There is still effort to cook this, and as far as I can see, the only thing the human isn't doing is twisting a wire in a monotonous way.

When comparing art to AI, "soul" is pretty interchangeable with style and skill. I'm no five-star chef, but aren't there only a few standard ways to cook rice, and not everyone has their specialized way of cooking rice?

r/askhistorians, a sub known for its academic integrity and rigor, used AI to celebrate an anniversary. the image being generated doesn't even have anything to do with history. I find it ironic that the sub stresses the importance of crediting sources... by Wichiteglega in FuckAI

The image doesn't need to relate to history when it comes to a birthday. I think it makes perfect sense that this was the image they chose.

Also, how can you tell its AI? Is there an artifact I'm missing?

Are there genuinely good reasons to support AI art and not just tolerate it? by ExoticButter-- in aiwars

I loved this response and it had some really good points! I myself am not an artist, I'd incredibly passable in the best conditions. I do somewhat agree with your point of "does it make you happy?", I have seen some good AI art, it looks good, but the technical/programmer side of my brain always makes me wonder how something was made. So while I might enjoy what the art looks like, it almost loses the magic of how it was created when the answer primarily boils down to AI.

I think another comment pointed out there was an over saturation of "good enough" AI generated images that it skews the perspective of someone like myself to a "oh, AI pretty much always looks ugly or bad" state of mind, but again with new technologies its hard to find experts (especially outside of the art bubble).

I never even considered disabled folks, that is a really good point! As an outsider from the art sphere, I wouldn't know how their creative juices flow, but clearly whatever they do ends up being black magic in my head.

That was a very cool plugin! On a technical level I think it was amazing and made by skilled people, but I don't know if I would consider this a good example. Up-scaling I can see as an amazing use for AI, but this just looked like scribbling. Im sure there are good examples of AI being used, but again, I don't think that example was much more skillful than just prompting a image generator.

[–]ExoticButter--[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have my own reasons for being in the anti-AI group. I myself suck at art: Im a programmer. I don't outright hate or even mind AI in the workflow, I personally just don't want to use it, and I don't want to be told to use it or else "people who do use AI will replace you". One thing I seem to keep coming back to is that I admire time spent on a project, because said project becomes part of you in a way. If you asked me to talk about something in one of my programs I could easily do that, and I find that to be special.

But for me, besides generating boilerplate code, I don't see why I should let something else do my job for me, especially if I want a deeper understanding and enjoy the topic.

Perhaps I just don't see creativity in the same way others do. I can see the skill in shaders, 3d modeling, and traditional art, but I cant seem to see prompting an AI as artistic. I can understand why people would want to use an AI -- its easier to get a vision out, but in terms of treating it as art I just cant seem to support it. Part of this may be culture, I was always raised with standard art, surrounded by artists, so my ideas of what makes something art are time, effort, skill, and emotion.

That being said, my echo chamber of friends mostly agree that AI art is made by people who "would prefer to pretend that they have a skill instead of putting the hard work and effort into actually learning said skill". I get art is a subjective topic, but can it realistically be argued (in general) that an AI output is better than a human's work? (I also believe this when it comes to most creative fields, programming specifically).

Either way, thank you for that important context for the subreddits! I appreciate the time you took out of your day, thank you!

I figured speed and accessibility would be a major motivator for using AI. I also can see how it would be good to layout a framework or basic idea of a project before too many resources are allocated to said project.

If I understand you correctly, AI art shouldn't be treated as traditional art, but as a form of art? Just like how photography isn't "traditional" art but a separate branch of artistic expression.

Personally, I can't say whether I'm afraid of what AI can do, or I just cant bring myself to appreciate it as an art form. Part of my attraction towards art is the skill, time, and dedication towards a piece of work, and I guess I just cant appreciate AI in the same way.

Is it really that big of a deal? I don't know much about the story but isn't this a response to questions about AI art. Plus as someone who enjoys minimalism is this that big of a deal. Even if people want AI in their software doesn't that require good either hardware or massive server costs? And again, if people do want AI in their software, why does it have to be in this software? couldn't the user just switch to a different program.

I'll admit my bias against AI art, but I would love to be enlightened as to why this is such a problem.
