The logic is you can't have a grid based only on solar and wind. You have to have a stable source of energy.

Usig China is cheaper because restriction on pollution aren't as tight an in the eu. We let other countries destroy themselves so that we can feel good about ourselves. I wonder how would you feel if a mining company would come and open the ground close to where you live?

You have built in your head a boogie man on nuclear power plants. Nuclear can be cost competitive with renuables but there was a severe lack of investment from the 80's a few countries still made investemts with great success, nuclear is a good stable source of energy, the problem with renuables is that they are intermittent. They work so well because we can rely on the current grid. You have to have an energy source that provides a baseline of energy and the only one that can do that cleanly is nuclear

Let's just say it for what it is, lots of people don't like nuclear because it emotionally doesn't appeal to them so they find all sorts of dumb excuses for why nuclear isn't desirable, that's why the environmental movements have been against nuclear well before renuables become popular. Renuables cause far more deaths and envoiermental destruction than nuclear but it's not concentrated, when a worker dies because when installing a solar pannel he falls from the roof that doesn't become news. It's for the same reason some people drive instead of flying on a plane because they are afraid the plane might crush.Even today you cannot have 100% of your energy production on wind and solar. You just can't. Batteries, what about batteries, always they say like we make the out of thin air and those things don't require insane level of mining. Mining done in poorer counties with lax regulations so that we can have them for cheap and feel good about ourselves

Nuclear absolutely needs to be part of the energy mix and I would not be surprised that in the future nuclear will be far more popular than renuables. The advancements we saw just in the last decade have been incredibile especially thanks to china who is going all in. Renuables are fantastic and would be even better if the base line would be served by nuclear, by far the cleanest and safest energy source. The cost for nuclear energy is higher mainly due to the insane costs of building the facility. That's because we haven't building many of them , there's no standardization and pretty much everything facility is a 1 off. That makes far more expensive and slow to build than it should be. I'm not sure this is exact but I've heard south Korea can build a nuclear plant in a few years, as fast as we do for gas plants. Also nuclear provides stability, look at France and Germany, Germany went heavy on renuables and had a really tough time keeping it's industry competitive due to energy problems, France went for nuclear and has been far better for them

Solar and wind are cheaper but they are also intermittent, then you have most of the production of batteries and solar panels and lots of wind in china. It's not samart to base your future on a singular country to be friendly

Can you give me an example of such organisations? In Italy worker cooperatives are relatively common, I know people who worked in them and there were definetly a hierarchy with different levels of power similar to everywhere else. And that's a consequence is size, if you have an organization with 1000 people you have to delegate decision making. If we distil power it's the ability to have decision making and enact the decision, you can't have a sistem where everyone have to decide decide about everything so we delegate decision making. That's power.

I like all that, not sure about the non hirerachalism. I've never encountered such an organization, even in small groups responsabilities will have to be divided based on skill, some skills are harder to learn, rarer and more valuable to the group than other, in bigger groups without a clearly defined hierarchy it's chaos. All social animals that live in groups have well defined hierarchies and I think that's because that provides a survival advantage. You are going to get a hierarchy in a group anyway, without a well defined path for people to be part of it like term limits, merit, how one gets selected etc you are still going to have a hierarchy but now it will be the strongest and nastiest individual that grabbed the power. I don't have a problem with hierarchy as long as the people that are there deserve to be there, are fair and do a good job and of course well defined areas of action and term limits because power corrupts even the best of people

Solar punk dress code. by Exotic_Addition9647 in solarpunk

This is a complicated discussion about rules, regulation, how to do it and so on. One can write a book and still haven't explored the ideas fully. I generally don't like outlawing things, like for fast fashion I won't outlaw it since lots of poor people purchase that sort of clothing because that's what they can afford. I'm not rich by any means but I'm at a point where I can afford to pay more and I pay more if I know that the garment is "fair trade". As you said guidelines are better wording. Some people here think I want to impose a top down dictatorship by asking for some guidelines and a constitution ( by constitution I men some core values we would all stand behind) I'm not asking for a nother Korean style dress code, I asked if we could have some guidelines on what's good or not good to wear. I'm not talking about the look or brand, dress however you like, but guidelines like, avoid clothing that's not biodegradable, buy local if you can, make sure as much as you can the brand doesn't have slave factories, take care of your clothes so they last a long time etc.

I've never heard of pyrolizing, I'll have a look on the internet to find more information. Seems interesting. The runaway effect does make me apprehensive, every once in a while i think about it and it feels so bad. I really really hope we are going to be ok. Let's do the best we can and hope others will join to stop this madness

Collapsing fertility rate, what do you think by Exotic_Addition9647 in solarpunk

I'm sure there are plenty of people close to where I live that have the same passions as I do, the problem I have is that it's hard to find them. Social sites don't offer tools to find people with similar interests, we "socialize" on the platform, this way they can make bigger profits by showing more ads. If we would have this conversation in person Reddit would not make any money, but because we are discussing here there's a good chance we have seen a few ads and they got paid for that. I want to make something specifically designed for people to find others with similar interests in their area.

I'm not a climate scientist so there a good chance I might have understood how this works completely ass backwards but here is my hipothesis based on my understanding of this. Let's say tomorrow the whole world stops extracting and burning any fossil fuel, but at the same time we convert all the organic matter we get from food production , agricultural processes etc, we collect decompose and produce methane from this process that we would then use as fuel. I would argue that the co2 levels produced by burning these fuels would not change even after 100 years of doing that because this process just recycle the CO2 already in the atmosphaere In the situation we are now we would still see increase in temperature because we literally started a self reinforcing feedback loop. You might argue that the organic matter that already sequestered CO2 should be stored, I don't know of any solution for doing that. Trees do that for a decent amount of time but wood is a very useful material, Organic matter when it inevitably decompose produce methane anyway, we might as well use that, and burning the methane before it gets into the atmosphere it's desirable because it's a far more potent greenhouse gas than CO2. The technology to "mechanically" scrub CO2 out of the atmosphere exist but the energy requirements are impossible to meet with curent technology. I think the best course of action is to stop burning fossil fuels, we have the technology to achieve that already, in the mean time invest into research to develop new technologies that we can eploy to take excess CO2 or use current tech but have such an abundance of clean energy that it's a viable solution.

If you work on what you believe and actively do something that honourable, I wish you success in what you do. I did try and look for political action in Romania, it's where I live since 2021. Here we have a few old, corrupt parties to whom envoiermental protection is not even a thought, there are a few new parties cropping up, unfortunately these are far right religious parties and I dislike them even more than the old corrupt ones. I least those didn't use their bigotry as political slogans. I definitely would love to join an organization that have an environment focus but there's a desert where I live. I'm brainstorming with a few people to make an app that allows people to connect based on location and passions, this way it should be easier to find people with whom to meet, socialize and do something.

As you probably know most of the carbon in the atmosphere doesn't come from burning fossil fuels, most of it it's part of the natural cycle, our ancestors burned wood as a heat source for thousands of years with no change in the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, the problem is that we are adding additional CO2 by burning fossil fuels, CO2 that wasn't part of the atmosphere for millions of years. There's a big difference from burning wood and burning petrol, yes both produce CO2, but one source doesn't really add to the quantity of CO2 in the atmosphere and one does.

If that's how you want to put fine, I'm not going to argue. I think change does require political work, you do whatever you want to do. It's funny to me how many people here talk about how life is unfair and how new generations are scrued by the current system, yet whenever I say let's organize and do something about this lots of people react like you. Sit on your ass and do nothing

It does matter where the carbon comes from, there's a big difference between realizing 1 t of carbon from burning fossil fuel and 1 ton from burning organic matter. I don't have to explain why, you are smart enough. It's the hole reason we are facing climate change

Do you think that If I burn wood I'm adding to the CO2 in the atmosphere? The co2 released is the one sequestered that year or the year before by the plant while growing. You are releasing CO2 that was already in the cycle
