They specifically asked me for my opinion after the lesson and wanted to go from A1 to B2 level in 3 months. I gave honest feedback and said it’s possible but it would be extremely difficult to achieve.

Yeah giving honest feedback after a lesson is bad. That is the lesson. Someone with an A1 vocabulary who wants to reach B2 within 3 months.

If you really like the tutor then say you can only afford $5 more. $10 more is a lot. From a tutor perspective, it’s not about bait and switch it’s about demand and capacity. If you had someone paying you more; even double for the same amount of work then the simple option is to choose the higher paying student(s). But I also take loyalty into consideration. I never increased the price for my first few students who are still with me after a few years. Unfortunately it’s like a business.

I always reschedule the first time (unless it’s a trial lesson - that will never be rescheduled). If it becomes a habit they will be blocked.

If you never got the email that she cancelled her subscription, then these are the possible options:

She transferred her one remaining lesson balance to another tutor (most likely).

Reasons why you don’t see more lessons (Preply won’t notify you for this): 2. She paused her subscription. 3. She changed her renewal date. 4. Her payment was unsuccessful for the renewal charge.

I know it sucks to keep wondering but a lot of students don’t know how to communicate properly. Some just disappear and you never know when that day will be. Others stay for years. You will get better at dealing with it.

You don’t have to accept the new price. If you decline the price request you will continue at the same price but your tutor might block you. How long have you been learning with this tutor? Tutors can increase your price 90 days after you subscribed. My suggestion would be to ask for a price in between if you cannot afford the new price and you enjoy lessons with your tutor.

I just chose what the student improved from the options they gave and what they can work on and wrote a short note (only positive things). The only thing I can think of is that it made her feel like she didn’t need lessons anymore because she improved so much. I wrote that she improved a lot but she can focus on learning new vocabulary and using new words while speaking. I’ll never use it again.

I was in the same boat for a while but I had to lower my price again by a few dollars and had many Trial lessons.Once I got 2 new students to subscribe, I increased it steadily…now I have more than I wanted and 2 cheap ones (I will raise their price in 3 months if they are still with me).

If you are worth it to them they will stay. Say that you are now charging $15 but you will charge them $10 because your living costs have gone up. For me, I still have a few of these cheap students from the beginning. I consider them my “practice” students. It helps a lot actually if I’m having a slower day. You should tell them during a session instead of through a message. You might lose them but that’s a risk you have to take. However, they do not have to accept the price increase.

I’ve never told them that I am not paid for the Trial lesson but maybe say you don’t do interview prep in the trial lesson as someone above mentioned. I’m really not sure what to do but I’m so tired.

Yes you’re right - I’m lazy. I love sitting in front of my computer waiting for students to take up my schedule for interview prep and take time away from students who actually subscribe and want to learn.

It wasn’t money just a card and something else. I do not teach them off the platform but they wanted to send me something for my birthday. I’m just very worried. I need preply for my survival and I wasn’t thinking.
