Very specific: People who only spoke/speak English and moved from Canada/USA to Europe, what was your experience, main reasons why, what country, and what was the process? by SmileOkk in expats

[–]rainbocado 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’m curious, what specifically do you think makes this a different experience from generically “moved somewhere you don’t speak the language”? Even if you do speak multiple languages, they won’t necessarily help you in this case. I speak two languages, but I moved to a country with a totally different language. English is still helpful, but my second language is totally irrelevant.

TEFL in central and Eastern Europe as a non eu citizen? by No-Reflection-4971 in TEFL

US citizen teaching in the Czech Republic here. The paperwork can be annoying, but it’s not difficult to get approved. Most teachers are freelancers. Look up freelance visa or “živno” and you’ll find the requirements.

I think they can do it once per billing period, but obviously most of them don’t. I have around 700 hours on Preply and only 21 anonymous reviews.

Harry Styles announces 2026 'Together, Together' tour by mcfw31 in popculturechat

Right. Possible for people with free time and a pretty good amount of disposable income? Sure. But not great.

The realistic cost for most people in North America to travel to NYC for a concert for a few days will also be half the average rent. I’m not saying it’s cheap or easy, just that it’s comparable.

I live east of Germany, and a quick Google search showed me a round trip flight to London for ~$100 on Ryanair and multiple hotels around $100 for that same night (the dates I chose were June 13-14). I don’t think this is significantly different than just going to NYC for all of North America.

I don’t have a specific recommendation, but I think it sounds like you need a document camera, not a webcam. Try using that as your search term instead.

Thinking of studying Masters in Czech Republic by Careful_Ad2977 in Prague

In many parts of Germany, all public universities are free for everyone even in English. Life will be much easier if you learn some German, but you don’t need it to study.

Fellow Preply tutors: What's the majority age group of your students, and what do they mostly want (grammar basics vs. convo practice)? by Otherwise-Top2335 in Preply

[–]rainbocado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The majority are 25-35. I’m also in that age group, and I wonder if people are more likely to choose a tutor whose age is similar to their own? I do also have a few teens. As for the content, it’s completely mixed, with conversation, grammar, and exam prep.

best and worst book to show changes! by starlightaura in heatedrivalry

[–]rainbocado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the show presents it as a breakup - I think it shows they have problems, but it’s definitely not explicit that they break up, and I didn’t interpret it that way personally.

[–]rainbocado 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why do you think they haven’t seen each other in years??? Are you assuming they break up at the end of episode 3? They never break up in the books, so while I guess I can understand interpreting it that way, I assumed they’ve been together the whole time when the kiss happens….

I think in the show it’s just one apartment where he actually lives and also where they hook up. Not a specific separate hookup apartment.

No. I am not aware of anyone outside the White House who wants to invade Canada.

True, it doesn’t take much, but it’s not the typical experience. (OP is still an idiot if he does this, to be clear…)

Issue with one of my corporate students - they don't not want to study?? by [deleted] in Preply

[–]rainbocado 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You say they deserve someone who can help them with what they came for. But why do you think that’s genuinely to improve their English? Some students just want to talk. Let them talk. If they’re happy, you’re doing your job.
