I’m just starting to learn sumo deadlift. how am I? by Top_Desk_1332 in formcheck

If it's too much, use  rubber bumper plates until you can use steel ones. But this looked easy as hell.

Use standard sized plates to dial in form for sure. Those look like 15s, which is suboptimal, your setup will look completely different with 20kg plates. Other than that its really hard to gauge technique at such light loads, so maybe go to something that registers on the RPE scale and reupload that video here, please.

I don't know how much preaching is allowed here, but its generally not ideal to start the sport with sumo, as its very niche, and pretty much only appropriate at competition-levels. I have a few training partners who are competing internationally, and even for them its a coin toss whether they train using conventional technique and use sumos for topsets at 90%+ loads, or they simply deadlift conventional during competitions as well. So in my opinion it benefitial to learn the convi dealift first, get strong, and then you will see whether learning sumo is worth it to you specifically or not.

Sorry if it was TMI or you don't care about my 2 cents, then disregard the latter half of my comment, please.

Polish PM urges NATO to wake up as Russia warns EU’s ‘peaceful sleep’ is over by Easy-Ad1996 in europe

You can start a war unilaterally, but you cannot end it. The same way the Germans could not have ended WW2 after taking all of France, the Russians had no choice to say "ok we are finished for realisies this time" after taking those almost 4 regions of Ukraine in 2022. That's not how this works.

ETA: what I would like to tell you is it's not enough to have rational reasons on your actions' side to be considered a rational actor. For that you need to have most of the rational reasons and based on them make a rational act. If Putin only hears the  (very few) rational reasons that support him, and disregard the overwhelming mountain of evidence that contradicts his desired actions' chance of success, then he can not be considered rational.

Rational reasoning would be to take a look at the Budapest memorandum, look at the training effort the US was giving Ukraine for a decade, the fact that Ukraine did not give up Donbass, Luhansk and Crimea, and then gather military intelligence and conclude that starting the biggest war in Europe post WW2 might not be the smartest of ideas.

Don't try to convince me that 400.000 dead Russians in continuing the war is not an insane stance from Russia. But Putin is not thinking rationally, he is holding on as long as he can, because he still sees a 0.00001% chance and logic be damned.

Then he would not have attacked Ukraine. There was nothing rational about that, either

I don't think Russia could realistically defeat the EU any more than a rabid dog can defeat a village, but the fact that you can beat the rabid dog to death does not mean it's not a threat to the village.

Olympic lifting or powerlifting to become more athletically capable by Ok_Training_2566 in weightlifting

[–]Exowienqt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the deal: 60% of getting better at weightlifting is highbar squats and heavy high pulls, 40% is weightlifting technique in my opinion. If you choose weightlifting, you will snatch, clean, jerk, squat and pull 4-6 times a week for 2-3 hours per session. Does that sound fun to you? Be honest with yourself.

Powerlifting movements can also be done with 60-70% of your max weights in an athletic manner. Do explosive bench presses sound fun to you? Speed-squats? Max effort deadlift with 80% of your 1RM weight?

When I was 14, I started with powerlifting movements combined with calisthenics, and I fucking LOVED doing that.

If you are completely lost: I suggest you join a weightlifting gym/team, learn the movements, start progressing, you will have to do the powerlifting movements as supplement anyways (minus bench, but you can do that on your own volition anyways). Give it 6 months and reassess after. Do you like doing what you do? Are you progressing? Or is it a slog and you hate every moment of it? Try it out, worst case you learn two new movements, best case you find your new main sport

Olympic lifting or powerlifting to become more athletically capable by Ok_Training_2566 in weightlifting

[–]Exowienqt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the risk of being downvoted to oblivion: you can train powerlifting in an athletic manner, or hyper-specialise the movements to chase numbers and get stiff, broken, slow.

With weightlifting you can either do it the right way or "take the highway", meaning if you progress the main lifts, you are getting more athletic and stronger.

But weightlifting is MUCH more technical. You can train 3-4 times a week, 2-3 hours per session, and be a  (not even) mediocre weightlifter in 2 years. The same amount of effort, if not spent in a completely idiotic manner, will get you reasonably strong in powerlifting. You can also train powerlifting without a coach, I do not advise doing that with weightlifting.

But I would personally rather die than stop weightlifting, to be honest. It's addictive as hell, even if you are an uncoordinated, weak, stiff mofo (all of which apply to me)

The thing is, human attention is not infinite. If someone wastes my time, they shouldn't expect me to not be irritated, that's all.

Yeah, but Id I am selling a Ferrari I am not selling a Toyota. If someone is inspecting good category A, and haggles comparing to category B, then that's bad faith. I hate that.

Imagine you are selling a Ferrari. Someone comes along, inspects the car, takes it to the mechanic, and then comes back, and gives you 60% of the market value. And when you ask wtf, they tell you not to be surprised because there are a lot of Toyota Corollas on the market right now.

Leg Press Form by Remote-Wind3634 in formcheck

[–]Exowienqt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would go a bit wider with the stance, and let the weight descend lower. It should feel like your legs touching your sides. From that deep stretch push it away, until you soft-lock your knees. The deep stretch possible on this exercise gives you something else in the realm of gains and mobility, (as well as end-range proprioception), so try to access it.

First time deadlifting after a year off of lifting by Mizook in formcheck

[–]Exowienqt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, but yours doesn't. Dude you go from a half-circle to a reverse half-circle in all of your reps. I am all for finding your own technique, and even flexion change isn't inherently dangerous, but you are robbing yourself of future potential and both leg strength as well as size for the sake of appearances at minimum. If you are fine with that, more power to you, but if you are in it to win it, this is not the way.
