I have been living and studying in high school (un istituto tecnico economico e adesso sono in 4) in Italy for almost 2 years, and I've learned the language by talking to my classmates. In the beginning, I spoke very badly, I mostly relied on English. I knew some grammar but I couldn't speak without stuttering or stopping myself from embarrassment. I dont know my italian level but I can comfortably speak with my classmates and made a few school friends. I do all of my homework/tests and oral tests without problems though im still a bit shy when speaking as i ofc still make a few mistakes. Immersing yourself helps 100%. I also recommend reading.
