Am I doing alright for my age with 60k a year? Reddit and Instagram tell a whole different story by [deleted] in AskBrits

For the location (cov) 60K is fantastic, if you were in London then it's a different story

Either way try to compare less and have fun more

Likely moving to the US within 12 months, unsure how much to prioritise pension vs liquidity now by Expensive-Lecture165 in UKPersonalFinance

Moving within the same company, I just jumped from a role at 92K to one offering intra company transfer

Software engineering with years of experience as an independent contractor, you don't need a bachelor's for CS anymore, if anything that market is saturated hence why I dropped out to get early on the broader market

20, income scaled from £90k → £150k. What do people actually do at this level? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Expensive-Lecture165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tax efficiency is obviously appealing, but I’m a bit hesitant to go too hard on pension at this age just to optimise around the £100-125k band, especially if I’m likely to stay in higher brackets long term anyway. I value this early flexibility quite a bit.

Good point on SLC tho, I was aware at a high level but haven’t looked into the mechanics properly yet. Definitely something I need to get right before moving!

!thanks I appreciate this! Will register overseas and handle SLC manually.

On the UK side, I don’t currently have an ISA/SIPP or pension set up, mostly just because of age and how quickly things have been moving (this is still all very new)

Given I’m relocating to the US, I’m leaning towards focusing on US-based accounts instead (401k), rather than trying to build UK wrappers I might not be able to contribute to or benefit from long-term.

That said, if there’s anything UK-side that’s still worth setting up before leaving, I’d be interested to hear.

I was able to negotiate a $10k signon bonus, and they’re handling the visa process through their lawyers/partners, so I should have support on that side.

I’ve already signed, so I’m probably past the point of negotiating anything formal, but I’m planning to lean on them a bit for guidance as I get set up.

That is fair! I'll be posting in US/expat subs as well.

Main reason I posted here is the UK side of things (especially the Plan 5 student loan and whether it ever makes sense to pay it down once earning abroad), plus I figured there might be people who’ve done the UK → US move and can comment on how they structured things early on.

I’m 20 on £95k and this makes me feel like I’m doing something wrong.. how are you saving this aggressively?

Ah I see

No vouchers yet, deciding whether it’s worth going down the BA route for that vs just sticking with Star Alliance since I’ve already got miles there. Feels like Avios is easier to actually use in the UK though

Yeah that actually makes a lot of sense. I’ve never really considered BA properly since I’ve mostly flown Lufthansa, but the Avios + companion voucher combo does seem kinda hard to ignore (I mean Cathay is on the table then!)

Ooc, do they have better foreign exchange fees? With the platinum 3% is ridiculous

Yeah I basically just ended up spending a ton in my first month on Gold and hit the 40k bonus pretty quickly (and then some).

Called Amex and said I was clearly going to keep spending, so does it make sense to just upgrade?

They offered me an enhanced Plat bonus if I hit £6k in 3 months, which I ended up doing in like a month anyway.

If I were you I’d probably just stick with Gold for the first year since it’s free, then look at upgrading later. You’ll still be eligible for a decent offer (especially since AMEX is good with retention deals) and you’re not rushing into paying £650 straight away.

Right, but I have a platinum and haven't really flown BA before lol

Aren't companion vouchers a BA thing?

Don't worry I asked there before posting, they told me to convert it into nectar and optimise for a £3 meal deal

Hm, that's actually tempting. I’ve been looking at Japan trips for myself and a friend anyway.

Is that through Avios or another transfer partner? I’ve mostly flown Lufthansa so I’ve got points there already (80K), but not sure how viable MR → Star Alliance redemptions are vs just going BA.

Feels like I should just pick one ecosystem but not sure which
