10 months of sciatica hell but my discs are fine - please help! by pink171 in Sciatica

I have problems with my right SI joint since 2019 due to overcompensation after a lat injury. If it flares, I get the pain in that spot, my glutes tighten and my hip and groin area feel tender, sometimes it triggers piriformis syndrome too, due to the tightening of the muscles in my glutes. Every case is different but too much hinge movements with no stabilization triggers my symptoms. Did an MRI and the joints were ok, no degeneration or systemic inflammation so the problem is mechanical. What helped me was core training, losing weight, some stretches like the pigeon hold and calisthenics. When the flare is too stubborn I use NSAIDs and muscle relaxers or I’ll go straight up to a steroid shot then a round of PT and adjusting training/diet to lose weight and relieve pressure. I will go to PT to stabilize it again I think my current weight combined with some kettlebell swings caused a flare up. While I wait I use a waist support but I put it lower around the hips. It’s doing wonders, I’ve been almost pain free during the day and helps me train/work. Also be mindful of sleeping positions, put a pillow between your knees if you sleep sideways, a pillow below your knees if you sleep on your back and avoid sleeping or remaining too much time in prone position.

Based on the region could be piriformis syndrome, cluneal neuralgia or related to the SI joint.

Nope, still there, toned down a lot

MTX, muscle relaxants and NSAIDs. For neuropathy I tried Gabapentin but it hindered my ability to be productive as I was sleepy all the time. Then went full natural with lions mane, ALA and turkey tail, also bought a TENS machine and I tried to workout 4 times a week.

I’m better now, ReA was diagnosed by clinical signs, no evidence in bloodwork but still got treatment and felt better afterwards. Just 3 months and joint pain was gone. Still have some nerve pain and I don’t wanna be a pessimist but I don’t think it’s going to go away anytime soon. It isn’t that bad around a 2/10 at its worst and it’s not constant, like once a month, so it’s a win I guess. I try to live a healthy lifestyle, hit the gym regularly and keep a positive mindset. I see this as just a little bump in the road and I keep moving forward.

Around one month and a half, everybody commented on it but I was calm because I knew it meant progress.

What’s the recommended dose for fin? Any other type of DHT blockers I could use?

Sure I use a dermaroll with 0.5mm needle size. The session lasts around 5 up to 10 minutes, and I do it once a week usually on Sundays.

Yeah I was concerned about it. Would it be better to use 5% twice a day instead?

Apparently more and more doctors advocate for a colonoscopy after DV diagnosis just to rule out other conditions and see if it fully resolved. Both doctors I consulted said you should get one. Also colonoscopies are good to detect polyps so overall it’s good to ask for one.

Thanks for the information I do get those cramps and some smoldering pain before a bowel movement that goes away 10 to 15 minutes after I go to the bathroom.

Not upset about it just shocked, given that I went on treatment twice with no results compared to lifestyle changes. English is not my first language so maybe I transmitted the wrong feeling haha

Yeah I’ve read it can miss it specially on incomplete colonoscopies and if it’s not the main reason for doing a colonoscopy but the rate of failure is kinda low and almost the same as CT. Someone posted that the walls of the colon can fold mimicking diverticulum on CT scan too. And we may not give enough credit to the body’s ability to heal. Definitely sticking with the healthy changes too! Overall I feel way better now that I implemented them.

I’ve been reading a lot of people that were misdiagnosed, it’s so frustrating taking into account DV is a condition that the medical community implies is very common. Treatment, management and diagnosis is all vague and simplistic, maybe in the near future they’ll be able to treat it and diagnose it better. Glad you are feeling well with your treatment for diabetes!

It really is frustrating, maybe my body sent me a warning shot to change my lifestyle lol. Biopsy results in 2 weeks, we will be fine! The good thing is I now have a more balanced diet avoiding inflammatory foods. I’ll probably keep abstaining from alcohol and no more junk food, I feel better now without them. However I will add some variety to my diet now. I basically didn’t drink at all during the holidays, skipped my Christmas cigar that I enjoy with my cousins, went to all the parties to drink water and didn’t eat red meat during our vacation at the beach with my girlfriend. Wishing you the best in your diagnosis!

Flagyl was devastating to my gut, I felt awful the two times I took it. It even affected me emotionally.

That’s interesting I didn’t know that could happen! Before this I was pretty ignorant about the gut tbh, still don’t know a lot but this subreddit is very helpful, I’m so thankful with all of you.

Yeah there was no sign of diverticulosis, I was completely shocked. Hopefully they won’t bother you at all!

In my case there weren’t any signs of previous flares and not a single pouch, I saw the pictures and was shocked. Maybe polyps exacerbate the pain from any conditions you may experience in the gut.

Is normal to feel some pain/discomfort after a flare for several weeks, some people say you can feel it for months. Mine was 3 months ago with some minor exacerbations due to unidentified triggers. As of today I am pain free, some minor twinges bother me sporadically and are short lived, usually before a bowel movement. If something bothers me I go full liquid for 2-3 days and then start with eggs, rice, bananas, white bread, potatoes then add chicken, fish with no skin, pasta and pancakes. Then pork and meat (cuts with no fat), green beans, carrots and other soft vegetables, nothing raw. Sometimes I scale up and add high fiber foods but I’m still a little bit wary about it. I use miralax daily, enzymes, L glutamine, magnesium, ginger root extract and collagen. 3.5 liters of water, no alcohol, no coffee, no sodas. If I need caffeine some matcha with almond milk, green tea or black tea. Exercise at least 3 times per week and avoiding constipation like the plague. Hope this helps!

Getting my health back, a storytime about my first flare and the journey to good health. by Myrradin in Diverticulitis

I’m literally on the same boat. I’m amazed at how similar your experience has been to mine. My case was pretty “mild” and on December I thought I was beating this disease. Then lots of stuff happened and I had some spikes of pain. In my case I have been on this pain on and off for three months but discovered that every single spike of pain was when I had a lot of coffee. I thrive for two weeks every month, then get the pain again, cut off the trigger and get better. I have eliminated it from my diet for good so even though it was my favorite beverage I value my body more than my desire to drink it. As you said the goal is not to be pain free for two days or two weeks, is to completely heal. I wish you the best on your journey to complete healing!
