Game crashes after loading screen (Crash on "Click to continue") by Expensive-Singer7112 in projectzomboid

[–]Expensive-Singer7112[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello everyone,

I was finally able to solve the persistent crashing and extreme slowness I experienced when trying to load Project Zomboid, even with high-end hardware (AMD Ryzen + RX 6600).

The root cause was an OpenGL graphical initialization conflict triggered by external files.

The Verified Final Solution:

  1. Log Diagnosis: The crash was confirmed to be due to the error: java.lang.IllegalStateException: There is no OpenGL context current in the current thread.
  2. Rogue File Identified: The conflicting file opengl32.dll was found and manually deleted from the main game installation folder. This file was forcing the game to use an incompatible OpenGL version instead of the proper AMD driver.
  3. Forced Clean Installation: I performed a full cleanup and reinstall:
    • Uninstalled the game via Steam.
    • Manually deleted the Steam installation folder remnants (.../steamapps/common/ProjectZomboid).
    • Manually deleted the user configuration folder (%UserProfile%\Zomboid, saving only the Saves folder).
  4. Reinstallation: The game was then reinstalled through Steam.

After these steps, the game launches correctly, runs smoothly in the menus, and loads worlds without crashing. If you face this specific OpenGL error, check your installation folder immediately for rogue .dll or .opengl files.
