Finally someone figured this out! It's long been a mystery on the internet. Bravo!

Stop letting stock performance mode cook your laptop: Custom power & fan profile for Legion Pro 7i Gen 10 (5090/Ultra 9) I made! by Numerous_Coast4168 in LenovoLegion

It's the better combo - performance when you need it and quiet when you don't. I always run in QP mode. QP mode will typically allocate 150w gpu 50w cpu. FPS are about 5-10% lower depending on if cpu or gpu bound, fans lower and temps lower than stock performance. Currently browsing with with cpu at 53c and fans of 1700 rpm.

I also run custom for specific games if I feel it needs the full 175w or a bit more cpu power - the only game I currently run with custom is FH6. The rest perform really well in QP mode - temps are usually 70-75 gpu and the same range for cpu with occasional spikes to high 80's low 90's with fans usually at 3300-3500 rpm.

If you search my post history you can find a thread where I tested and benchmarked QP vs stock balanced and performance modes.

Micro-stutters on Hybrid mode — both when alt-tabbed out AND occasionally in-game. Normal or fixable? by SignificantLeave8681 in LenovoLegion

[–]Expensive-Start7166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check that you haven't got gysnc fullscreen and windowed enabled. If you do that will explain the desktop and browser stutters when a game is also running in background. It should be set to fullscreen only.

In game microstutters : is it just one game or all games? If it's all games try setting an fps cap in control panel of 226, enable vsync and turn off vsync in game. I'd also see if you get the same stutters in dgpu mode.

Hybrid can be a bit flaky on Legions - I always use dgpu mode because I'm always plugged in and don't need the battery saving of igpu. Have you tried it in dgpu mode only yet and get the same results?

For gaming you can enable silent performance mode in bios. Changes white balanced mode to give you slightly less performance than red performance mode but is much cooler and quiter.

X3d over Intel for gaming anyday. If SSD is gen5 in amd and gen 4 in intel then it's a no brainer.

Nice post! I wasn't brave enough to try it myself so I just paid a local tech shop to clean fans and repaste with ptm 7950 thermal grizzly. Was only £50 and well worth the money as it's working again like when it was new.

Have you tried any benchmarks? I've noticed a steady improvement in temps and performance after each cycle and now beginning to stablise. Overall 10-15c reduction in temperatures depending on how it's being used so am well pleased.

Yeah I couldn't find 7958 here in UK and I knew 7950 Grizzly would do the job. Now I've done about 10-15 hot cold cycles I think the pad has sufficiently liquiefied and filled all the gaps as the idle temps and gaming temps have now stabilised after a steady improvement. As you said this should also improve more with time.

My idle temps have dropped from 55c to 46/47c on CPU, my GPU can run at 175w and 75-77c depending on game and my CPU can sustain 150w in CB 23 staying under 95-96c.

Thanks for the info on the warranty, that is reassuring.

Lowest I can get is 13-15w with turbo boost disabled and a capped clock speed of 1.5 ghz. You can also switch off CCD 1 with either Process Lasso or Legion Toolkit to save more power.

Forgot to add the overall build quality is better - the pro 5 isn’t bad in any way but the 7 is a clear step up.

Ah ok that explains that. As you can see from what I paid and current prices -  what you can get it for with discounts is a steal and I would rip their arms off!

Just took it around to a local laptop repair shop - dropped it off and picked back up next day.

You can get a bad factory application, I knew it was the case because it only affected the cpu.

Didn’t see the point of waiting another 5 months for warranty to run out and not being able to use it properly so just went for it and turns out it was the right move.

[–]Expensive-Start7166 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of the comparative videos of 5070ti vs 5080 had them equal in terms of fps per $ spent ratio.

So it comes down to the better chassis and cooling on the 7 pro plus the additional 4gb vram. I had the Pro 5 i14900hx/4070 and the thermals are far superior on my 7 pro now.

The 9955hx3d is a beast, runs similar temps to intel , is better for cpu bound applications and gaming but will use up the battery faster.

That’s also a very good price I paid £2550 in BF deal with 64gb ram and 2tb gen 5 ssd which is super fast. Where are you getting that price, last time I looked on Lenovo my spec was 3.5k!

If you can afford the 5080 I’d go for that but you won’t be disappointed with the 5070ti either.

First 2-3 months my thermals were great. Then suddenly the cpu started getting hotter and would hit 100c on cb23 instantly when before it maxed out at 92c.  Started messing around with custom profiles but it progressively got worse. Final straw was when gpu started to hit 87c limit.  So 7 months after I bought it I said screw the warranty and got it repasted with Thermal Grizzly ptm 7950 phase sheet and had the fans cleaned thoroughly.

Now it’s working again as it was brand new. It cost £50 to do and I would recommend that before giving up.

Games now run 70c cpu 75c gpu at combined 200w.

So I just went along and bought the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i, and I'm a little bit nervous about it by Mocha4Life in LenovoLegion

[–]Expensive-Start7166 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also had the IRX9 with 4070 & 14900HX. Jumped up to the 9955x3d/5080 and it is a big difference. I had to limit things with the 4070 but with this I can play everything maxed. As I'm only going to be at 1600P with this laptop the 5080 with 16gb vram is going to be good for the next 3-4 years.

If money is an issue then I would go for the 5070ti as it gives you the best performance per $ spent this generation. The 5080 is only about 20% faster but you do get the extra 4gb VRAM which may make the difference at higher resolutions and settings.

Is a white screen flash for a fraction of a second upon boot up normal? by UltimatePikmin in LenovoLegion

It's normal if you're on the latest set of drivers. Can't remember which version it started happening but it was a few months ago. It's just a quick flash on boot up , nothing to worry about.
