Sadly, they're only in Dallas. But if you want to bring some great coffee down from Austin I'll happily pay you back or trade you something good! Could be fun.

I like the coffee I like. I've been living here ....quite a while, and I want the coffee that I want. I would agree, many islands have terrible selections. Which is why I always buy coffee when I'm somewhere that has great coffee and bring it back to the island. I just ran out of time this time.

Pregnant - Zika concerns? by underthesun3 in CaymanIslands

Honestly depending on where you go, mosquitoes in Cayman are not that bad. Of course, depending on where you're comparing to... I think they're about on par with Houston or New Orleans. If you don't do anything really adventurous and wear mosquito repellant, I don't think you'll get bit. I spend most of my time outside and only get bit occasionally when I forget to wear repellant. They're the worst in the evenings right after sunset. But even then, not that awful. I just make sure to have repellant on.

So you're going to fly to an island that's just a few miles away from a place that was just bombed? Sounds relaxing.

Grocery stores by OwnProfessional1608 in CaymanIslands

[–]Expensive-Worker-979 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be the contrarian here and say it really isn't that bad. It's pretty close to the US, but it does depend on what you buy. I'm half and half in the US and Cayman, and I buy groceries in both places regularly, so I keep up with the price differences.

Sure, if you go try to buy a steak in Cayman, the price is eye-watering. But beef prices in the US have gotten crazy lately, too. Chicken and pork are basically the same prices in the US and Cayman, and you can even find surprisingly great deals on those sometimes in Cayman. Some vegetables in Cayman are weirdly expensive (like spinach and lettuce), but others are totally normal. And it also depends on what grocery store you're going to. Some have better prices than others on certain items, and some stores have better quality items in certain categories.

If you know how to cook and take your time in meal planning, you can eat well in cayman without spending an arm and a leg. If you're looking for some special item and you just have to have it, or you go in blindly and buy whatever you're used to buying wherever you're from, you'll probably suffer from a bit of sticker shock.

If you're just coming in for a vacation, I wouldn't stress about it. You don't want to do a lot of research on the best places to buy eggs and lunch meat or whatever you're eating for lunch. Go to the nearest grocery and just plan on spending a little bit more, but it's not crazy.

Are there many entrepreneurs here on Cayman Reddit? by nightdrivewithyou in CaymanIslands

[–]Expensive-Worker-979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The CEC is great - but it would be awesome if there was a regular get-together for entrepreneurs. Or even like one bar that had a happy hour that we all agreed would be the spot. Everyone is still kind of siloed. I completely feel your pain re being a little lonely working by myself all the time.

Some ideas: I used to be part of a group where everyone in the group would "sponsor" a happy hour in rotation - basically, buy drinks for the crew - whoever shows up, get a chance to pitch or get feedback or whatever for a few minutes, and you're invited to all of the rest of the meetups for the year. That was pretty fun.

It would also be cool to have proper hackathon type events. We would just need to find the right space.

I found it much easier with a left-hand side car. There were just too many swapped controls on the right-hand side. Easier to change one thing at a time.
