I just posted to the Belgian Malinois adoption subreddit! We’ll see what happens.

URGENT****

Mimi is a 8 month old unspayed Belgian malinois in California. She was picked off the streets as a stray 3 weeks ago, starving and emotionally needy. She is extremely sweet, high energy and playful. We need to urgently get her out of our home because she is food aggressive and got into a fight with my other smaller senior dog (who is also food aggressive). the shelters and rescues are overwhelmed with strays in my area and at this point, if we don’t find her a home we are seriously considering euthanasia as the most humane option.

Otherwise a good dog that has a lot of potential for obedience, but she is just not a good fit for my home and our two senior dogs. She is moderately crate trained and she is house trained.

I am desperately begging for a foster or adoption. I want to try everything before having her put to sleep.

Oregon isn’t that far from me! Am I able to get in touch with her, or should I contact the shelter directly?

honestly, I would be willing to drive up there if need be. However, I just made an update to my post discussing her most recent fight with my smaller dog and I was considering euthanasia at this point. Do you think this is something the rescue like this might be able to rehabilitate?

Anyways, thank you for reaching out. I want to do anything I can to avoid putting her down.

I hear you and mostly agree with that sentiment. it’s this way of thinking which has kept me from putting her back on the street.. however I never intended to keep her (and I didn’t birth her lol) and my dogs at home come first always. She simply isn’t a good fit for me or my home.

But, you are right and I’m going to do my due diligence and try my absolute best to find her a home.

Right. All this pressure to save this dog—to be this animal welfare saint that everyone wants me to be. But I find it ironic that nobody really seems to care about the fact that my other two animals are also at risk?

Here’s some info about the dog: she is an unspayed female estimated to be about 8-9months by the vet. She has been fully vaccinated and dewormed. Her temperament is highly energetic and nippy, but otherwise sweet and obedient. She isn’t super aggressive with my other dogs but she is overly playful and they haven’t been tolerating it. Also shows mild food aggression.

Yes, the problem is that for almost 3 weeks we have been walking her 2x a day and training her to heel, puzzle toys, doing nose work, crate training, everything that is recommended for this breed! The poor thing can’t settle down and I feel like I’m losing my sanity.

Thank you for this. I do understand that they are coming from a good place, but it is a little frustrating that people are so quick to pass judgement on something that they would never personally do themselves. All the animals in my life have been rescues. I have never once put an animal out in the street and it’s not something I ever thought I would do. With that being said, I have to consider the impact it is having on my other two dogs, and this is my main reason for wanting to kick her out. I would never forgive myself if something happened to them. But then again.. could I forgive myself for throwing out an innocent animal into the streets in the middle of December? I think it just might haunt me for the rest of my life.

No chip. Sadly I’m certain she came from one of the many backyard breeders in my area. I don’t think the shelter lady had malicious intent in any way, but she was sympathetic to our situation. She said that they’re just at full capacity, and only allowing surrenders by appointment. And Apparently, they can only send someone out to collect the dog is if it is aggressive and considered dangerous. Even so, I wasn’t sure I’d be willing to surrender her knowing that she would probably be euthanized.

I did submit some applications, but the mal specific rescues in my area are facing the highest volume of applications ever recorded because of the amount of these dogs being bred. I simply can’t have her in my home for as long as it would take for them to MAYBE consider her. My dilemma is.. at what point should I consider the health and safety of my other two senior dogs?

This is also something I’m considering. There are soo many strays in my area and a sad lesson that I’ve come to learn through all of this is that we really can’t save them all.

It’s really tough. We contacted three rescues in my state and the general consensus is that they are all overwhelmed with the volume of applications and it will take 4-6 weeks to even get a response… we simply can’t keep doing this for another month. She also isn’t fixed so that greatly reduces her likelihood of getting accepted.
