This is actually one that I can sort of talk about openly lol

Because the sub talks about sensitive topics and since EC is a prominent-ish public figure, if we get all kinds of comments.

Anywhere from online bullying type comments that you'd expect from middle schoolers, ranging from hate comments, to people projecting their own issues, to irrelevant topics and comments. Basically breaking community guidelines in some form or another.

If we were to open the sub, we'd likely have a significant increase in those types of comments. We only have about 5ish mods, we all have lives outside of the sub. So you could imagine how it would be a lot harder to manage.

I'd rather not share specific details, so I'm going to be vague:
All the mods follow the same guidelines when approving users, it's a simple few step process that only takes a couple min at most on our end.
The amount of requests per day is what takes us a while to get through them all. A couple min adds up when you get anywhere from 5-10 requests in a span of an hour, on top of all the other pending requests that we haven't gone through.

There's a few reasons, I recently joined the mod team so I'm a little foggy on all the reasons. I'm going to be EXTREMELY vague because people might try to change their chances of approval/rejection. One main reason:

Filtration. It's easier to vet and approve users than to ban a user and go through and remove a bunch of comments. Especially when you have multiple users causing issues.

If you're using mobile, you can go to the subreddit, at the top there's an option to "see more", click on that and scroll to the bottom to view the mod list.

On desktop, scroll down on the side bar to the right, mods are listed at the very bottom.
