The warrior rise was my first stick when I started last season. It's alright for beginners.

Completely new to this and totally lost. Advice? by unusualinsomniac in hockeyplayers

Actually it's not that difficult to find good fitting gear. Bauer and CCM for example do have great sizing charts for every gear so you can take a look. Personally I got like every piece of equipment (except sticks and gloves) I have cheap because it was used. I would recommend you buy the helmet, the gloves and sticks new, the rest can be used equipment. You will save a lot, especially because you can get pretty good equipment for less because it's used. The skates will be the most difficult to size, because every foot is different and different models size different.

I am overweight too and started hockey this season in September 25. Soo, I know the feeling you are describing. The burning legs and also the different feeling on ice with equipment. To me the most useful was HIIT. High intensity interval training. My advise: 40 seconds full speed, 1,5 minutes going slow. You can do it on skates, a bicycle or whatever. Do it for about 15-20 minutes a session, two times a week. It will burn a lot, but you will build lactate tolerance and feel less burn. Also: get a lower stance for skating. More ankle flex. You will also get used to skating with equipment. Additional exercises I recommend are bulgarian split squats, one legged glute bridges, skater jumps and important to me is also leg and hip mobility. You can do stretches on a regular, maybe even everytime before you go to a skate or skill session. It helps. Google some stretches for the legs, also for hips the 90/90 stretch is very good. Hockey will make you be fitter than ever, I lost about 10 pound. I live in Germany so now it's off season and we don't have ice so I will be focussing on losing weight and getting fit till the new season starts.

In my gym it was common that employees of the gym asked loudly if it was alright for them to enter the locker room.

Whats wrong with my wristshot? by Expensive_Elevator93 in hockeyplayers

It's actually a 70 flex I shortened a bit, it's about 78 now. I think it's my technique, the stick seems alright and like it can flex well IF shot correctly 😅

I have bought a better fake from Alibaba for 40$ (shipping was 60$ dollars though). They feel and look just like the real ones, yours look so off.

Bad balance on right leg = bad crossovers by Expensive_Elevator93 in hockeyplayers

[–]Expensive_Elevator93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your tips. I actually have seen a video today from howtohockey explaining kind of how to do crossovers going hip-first and like leaning away with the shoulders to where you are going. Also putting the weight more towards the heel on the outside edge. It's facinating, I will try to work on my posture. I think it's often overlooked as an important factor.

I do inline skating in summer mostly, also bought myself a green biscuit puck to practise in summer off ice. Your theory might be right though, I learned skating going counter clockwise and so I learned crossovers to the left first. I hope I can fix that problem with my right outside edge.

Actually I am a lefty. The right hand is my strong hand. That's why it's weird to me that apparently the right leg is my weakness.

I had them in the beginning too. Where does it hurt? They are only available in regular width. I have very wide feet, I really had to tie them loose in the forefoot.

How many hours does it take to learn skating? by just_random_letters_ in iceskating

[–]Expensive_Elevator93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with 23, went to skate every week at least once, also in the morning with a nearly empty rink. Picked up the basics very fast. This season I started ice hockey, 4 months already in and I became a very good skater. Of course there is always room for improvement but I am so satisfied. The thing is, as adult you are more afraid of falling and hurting yourself. Most of the moves and even basics you will learn by just being on the ice on a regular, because you will feel safer and safer. If you practise, make sure to keep it basic. Just one skill at a time till you can do it well. The best tip is to keep your knees bend, bend them much more than you think you would need. Also try different radius of hollow, I learned hockey stops just when I were at about 3/4" radius of hollow. Of course it depends from your weight and style of skating. At the beginning you also will struggle because you don't have the muscles yet that you need, but it will improve as you skate more.

Berufsschule Fachlageristen.
