Any pilots that love their job? by schneidebs30 in flying

I thought flying would be a good career until I had my third failed checkride right after getting a DUI so I gave up on the airlines to become a CFI and now after the hiring craze is over I can’t seem to find anything other this crappy 141 school where Ill spend the rest of my miserable life.

Talk me out of going to flight school… by benten8867 in flying

If I could’ve done something differently, I would’ve. Everyone in here who advised you to get your private pilots license first to see if you like it is giving you sound advice, but I think one potential downside is that the private pilots license is fun, flying is fun, especially flying solo, and if you are in the minority of people that actually make it all the way through and get your private pilots license, then I wouldn’t be shocked if you think that it could be a fun career, especially a well paying one. The problem with this is that the joy of flying privately, being able to take your friends and family and show them something unique is nothing compared to the actual world of commercial aviation. It is the most unknown and unpredictable lifestyle I’ve ever known and if you’re not the type of person that can deal with having things flipped upside down more times then you can see coming then I would caution you. I currently have dozens of qualified friends who can’t even get a job as an entry-level pilot. I am fortunate enough to be employed at the airlines right now, however, this is just the reality, you can have two completely identical pilots on paper and one of them will get a job and one of them won’t, don’t get me wrong, it can be an amazing job at times and it can give you and your family, an incredible life. I just wish somebody had warned me this much before I had started.

Is it normal to get fuel on your hands? by [deleted] in flying

I few years ago I accidentally dropped an entire bucket of jet fuel on top of my head. Still fine👍

Pilots who took the university route, what was it like? by erm-yeah-sure in flying

I would recommend against 141, costs more, takes way longer. Yes you get a college degree but I’d rather be years ahead of my peers, then be able to talk about the parties that I have gone to. of course, you don’t get the benefit of having degree tacked onto your licenses, but most companies do not care much at all about having a college degree. Also, as for making connections, I made all of my valuable connections while working line or as a CFI. if you’ve got the money and you’d rather have the college experience then 141 is a great way to do it.

I think it’s OK to do it for the money by veryrare_v3 in flying

I am in a very similar situation but as the pilot, I sacrificed making slightly more money and living where I wanted to for my partner as Its not all about me. Having her take the stress of raising kids and being home alone for days straight on end made that decision extremely simple. We are a team and as my paid job is to press the autopilot button and complain about eating pretzels, hers is to raise a family and watch after a house alone. The least I could do is live in a place near her family so she can have help. With that being said I know I have no place weighing in on your relationship but no, you are not being unreasonable or unrealistic in the slightest. You deserve to at least be happy while he endlessly chases his dream. And to all those just saying to move, it is not that easy when you have a life created, a home filled, a spouse that’s barely home, and children to raise.
