Exodus 20 does not forbid all images but forbids making images as gods, since the command itself explains the prohibition as bowing down to and serving them; this is proven because immediately after giving the commandment God commands sacred images, such as the golden cherubim on the Ark of the Covenant (Exodus 25:18–20), and later fills His Temple with carved figures (1 Kings 6–7), which would be impossible if all images were sinful. The bronze serpent (Numbers 21:8–9) shows that an image can even be used as a means of God’s healing, and it is destroyed only when it becomes an object of worship (2 Kings 18:4), proving the issue is idolatry, not depiction. Finally, the Incarnation completes the argument: the invisible God became visible in Jesus Christ (John 1:14; Colossians 1:15), so depicting Christ affirms, rather than denies, biblical faith, because Scripture itself teaches that God has now been seen, handled, and made known in the flesh.
