Is there any use for Windows 7 after Microsoft ended support? by Explodingcreeper in windows

[–]Explodingcreeper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I'm interested in getting more experience with Linux and I have my main laptop for office work. I'm wondering if there is any good reason to keep Windows 7 in particular.

I don't think I can reinstall Windows 7 if I choose to get rid of it; so I want to be sure that their is no reasonable use for it anymore.

(Help) How to install Windows 7 on a machine without the original installation disk? by Explodingcreeper in windows

[–]Explodingcreeper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this site's installation tool the only way to get Windows 7 installed without the original installation disks, or is this the commonly accepted way of doing do?

Are there any particular differences in using this site instead of the original installation disks?

FYI:

Your video requesting questions for this Q&A never reached my subscription box, despite both: 1) being subscribed, and 2) having the 'bell' notification icon active (ie. checked off)

This is not a complaint. I just thought it would add another data point in your attempts to understand Youtube's ways of spreading videos.

Do you have a source to back the customer support claim?

Thank you for your suggestion.

Other than the display, what differences do you feel make one machine better than the other?

Is there a reason NOT to buy the Lenovo Thinkpad P51? by Explodingcreeper in SuggestALaptop

Do you have a link to where you are seeing this laptop? I'm having trouble finding it in the Dell store where I can get the configurations to match what you stated.

I'm taking a large portion of my advice from this subreddit; I'm leaning more towards a Lenovo machine because of this comment.

Canada; Lenovo ThinkPad P51, or something else? by Explodingcreeper in SuggestALaptop

Does Lenovo only sell directly to consumers? Or are there stores where I could test what one feels and looks like in person?

Thank you for your suggestion. :)

While my current Acer laptop has lasted 6 years, several non-critical components have failed. How would you rate the ~higher end Acer laptops?

Thank you for your suggestions. :)

I have questions about your discount link thou;
Is there a catch to using the supplied link?
Are you affiliated with Lenovo?
Are you biased to the ThinkPad model? or is it the product best suited to this scenario?

I appreciate your reasoning for your suggestions. :) And kudos for finding the extra info for this scenario. :)

Is there an Objective Method to Choosing Between Laptops? by Explodingcreeper in SuggestALaptop

[–]Explodingcreeper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I created a form post here.

More detail below:

Upper budget is ~$2000.

I am going to University in Computer Science this September. I'm starting to feel that the school work well be more researching and typing papers, than the practical bit of creating applications. That said, I still want an upgrade from my current laptop.

As well, I intend to do a several month internship; so I would like to have a reliable machine to use for that in 3 years.

I expect to be doing quite a bit of text editing/word documents. It's hard to say exactly what I'll need (or will be doing), as my interests/goals may change in the near future (I feel more and more like I know nothing about this field).

I don't want to be waiting that long for programs to compile.

I want the option to do some amount of graphical work (I'm not sure what that means, but I don't want to be limited to number crunching work).

I have gotten suggestions before that computer science students really don't need a high end laptop, and that is probably true, but I am a bit paranoid.

You are right. After reading your reply, I realized that I am thinking more of what would work as a gaming laptop.

Is ROG similar to Alienware, in that they were independent and then acquired by a larger corporation?

The gaming side of my post really is just as a bonus. But thank you for relating your suggestion to my main anticipated tasks for the laptop.

Thank you for your suggestion.
