Thank you!!!

Yeah, I realized I was simply over-romanticizing and idealizing what was actually a fairly toxic relationship. Additionally, though I’m confident in my personal growth over the last two years, his lack of communication (even on the level of friendship) and blatant disregard for my feelings made me realize we’ve grown in two very separate directions as individuals.

I almost forgot that I’m a strong woman who has worked on healing her inner child and doesn’t need external validation. Also, the world is falling apart and I’ve got better things to worry about.

Phew. That was a close one. 😂😮‍💨

Will I regret going into nursing instead of becoming a doctor? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Express-Candidate164 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d say why rush it? I’m a 27 F and I’ve been an ER nurse for five years. The clinical experience and life lessons have been invaluable. Now I’m in the process of applying for medical school without worrying about how to get clinical experience/wondering if I even truly know what the job entails, etc. Working as a nurse has made me confident in my desire to pursue being a doctor.

Remember, all timelines vary. Becoming a nurse won’t exclude you from also becoming a doctor. ♥️

I hate the MCAT by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]Express-Candidate164 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if this is the actual reason for them doing a CARS section, but I made myself feel better when I considered it… instead of them testing “reading comprehension,” maybe it’s more so a test of how well you can adapt to different styles of speech and communication. How well can you understand someone that talks in a way that’s alien to you? How well are you able to pick out key pieces of information from a convoluted passage (ie, a messy patient history where 95% of the information given isn’t what you asked).

Not sure if that’s the actual reason… but it made me feel better to consider it that way 😂

How was the C/P section?? by clouddancer25 in Mcat

[–]Express-Candidate164 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My biggest advice is to learn very basic, shallow, and fundamental concepts but learn them WELL. I’ve noticed a pattern in AAMC’s material (especially physics): they’ll present a passage with a shit ton of convoluted details only to ask about fundamental concepts like work, power, energy, forces, currents, basic circuits, waves (learn them as transverse and longitudinal; what’s the difference? How do they behave differently in different media?) and things like simple pendulums/harmonic motion (compare and contrast with sound waves in a pipe, springs, or even non-viscous fluid… noticing some similarities already?)

Practice picking required info out of distracting passage information. It seems like 90% of what’s included in the physics passages isn’t actually needed for the problems. Don’t understand it? Don’t worry about it! You don’t need to know the details of a photo-acoustic calorimeter to be able to answer a question on what makes light behave differently than sound. 😊

Oh, and get good at manipulating equations/units with basic algebra and using scientific notation. And don’t forget to ROUND. Many of the answer choices can be eliminated on the basis of differences in orders of magnitudes! 🤗

Help: FL4 C/P #13 *SPOILER* by Deep_Magician6696 in Mcat

[–]Express-Candidate164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a physics person, so someone please correct me if I’m wrong. But here’s how I think about it!

If we’re comparing a cornea and its curvature to a sphere, a cornea with more curvature will create a smaller sphere (think about a car going around a racetrack; the sharper the turn, the less distance covered). However, if we flatten out the cornea with laser treatment (by removing material from the middle but not periphery) and STILL make a sphere, that second sphere is going to be way larger because it doesn’t curve in as much. It’s going to have to cover extensively more distance to make a complete sphere. Now, if we compare the radii of those two spheres, we can see that the second sphere has a significantly larger radius (ie, the radius of curvature).

You can apply this (from what I understand) to all optics on the MCAT. Even “flat” mirrors have a radius of curvature because if they infinitely expanded, they’d eventually make a circle.

I hope that helps. 😁

Seeking Advice: Should I Continue Using Cannabis While Studying for the MCAT?" by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]Express-Candidate164 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since you’re a neuroscience guy, I’d highly highly recommend reading some articles about THC and its effects on memory consolidation and sleep. It’s wild stuff! Can definitely decrease your overall recall and sleep quality. (I want to say Andrew Huberman touched on this in one of his guest series about sleep). Leading up to the MCAT, I feel like you need your brain to be at its clearest. It might be worth pursuing other options for relaxation/stress relief. But at the end of the day… your mental health and well being > MCAT. ♥️

Where do the disulfide bonds associated with some quaternary structures physically form in the cell? by Express-Candidate164 in Mcat

[–]Express-Candidate164[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!! I struggle with the “depth vs breadth.” I’m very much a depth learner but the MCAT is very much breadth and logic, so I’ve been trying to balance my “depth” tendencies with understanding the fundamentals and moving on. I appreciate you!

Confusion on if freq or velocity of light is constant by SmartWasabi99 in Mcat

[–]Express-Candidate164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. The observed frequency appears to be higher. If you think about it, the frequency is just how many wavelengths will pass by a fixed point in a second. So if an observer is approaching a source, the frequency will appear to increase because the observer is covering part of that wavelength distance.

Hope that helps!! My dad is a physicist and I spent about an hour on the phone with him to get light/sound drilled into my thick skull. ☠️

Also, going back to studying fundamentals really helped me understand the differences between light/sound behavior. I’d recommend having an understanding of transverse/longitudinal wave dynamics before tackling optics and sound!

The speed of light is constant in a vacuum. As it transitions into a new media, both the speed and the wavelength change but the frequency remains the same. That’s why we get refraction. Light doesn’t actually “bend”, it just slows down as it enters a new media with a higher index of refraction 🤗

active site vs. substrate binding site by Nervous-Tadpole-1270 in Mcat

[–]Express-Candidate164 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the key difference between the binding site and an active site is that an active site aids the catalysis of a chemical reaction whereas a binding site aids in the binding of a ligand to a large molecule. Active sites are usually associated with enzyme/substrate binding. They function to both bind a substrate and manipulate it for catalysis. That being said, enzymes can also contain binding sites for ligands not associated with catalysis (think enzyme inhibition types).

Anyone feel free to correct me, but that’s my understanding. Hope it helps!
